Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer is getting a free-to-play version

Konami’s switch to focusing on mobile games and pachinko machines is well-publicized at this point, and the publisher seems willing to abandon its largest franchises, such as Silent Hill and Castlevania, to make this happen. However, its Pro Evolution Soccer series shows no sign of stopping, with some reports even stating that it will be the lone console game that continually produced by Konami. While the soccer series isn’t being turned into a pachinko machine, it appears that Konami is taking the first step in making it free to play.

On December 8, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 versions of PES 2016 will feature a free-to-play option, which includes seven teams as well as an exhibition mode. This sounds an awful lot like a demo, but the free-to-play version of the game will also feature “myClub,” the microtransaction-fueled mode that bears resemblance to the “Ultimate Team” option found in several of the EA Sports games. Naturally, the free version offers “unlimited access” to this mode.

If you want to simply play soccer with your friends using the latest players, however, then the free-to-play version of PES 2016 may actually be for you. The game “will also be compatible with all future gameplay and content updates throughout the entire PES 2016 season,” according to Konami, and since the game just launched in September, that should give you plenty of time to play.

The decision to offer a free version Pro Evolution Soccer raises the question of whether or not Konami is looking to transition the series to a free-to-play only model in the future. Metal Gear Solid V, while still a full-priced AAA game, offered microtransactions and even an “insurance” system for its online mode. Meanwhile, the presumably single-player only Silent Hills was outright cancelled following turbulence between Konami and director Hideo Kojima. The Contra reboot teased several years ago appears to still be in limbo, while a mobile version was announced earlier this month.

The Meta Quest Pro and Quest 2 are getting big price cuts this month

Meta revealed that it is bringing down the price of some of its most expensive VR headsets. The Meta Quest Pro will now cost $1,000 instead of $1,500, while the 256 GB model of the Meta Quest 2 will drop in price from $500 to $430.

This news was announced in a blog post, where Meta gave its reasoning for the price drop. "Our goal has always been to create hardware that’s affordable for as many people as possible to take advantage of all that VR has to offer," it explains. "While we aren’t lowering the price of Meta Quest 2’s 128GB SKU, a new lower price for 256GB of storage will let even more people feel the joy of fully immersive games and experiences. Similarly, by lowering the price of Meta Quest Pro, we’re making our industry-leading Meta Reality technology and Infinite Display optical stack available to even more businesses and professionals around the world."

Why you shouldn’t expect a PlayStation 5 Pro anytime soon

It seems pretty likely that Sony will eventually release a "PlayStation 5 Pro" somewhere down the line. The company has a history of making mid-generation console updates with things like the PS4 Slim and Pro, as well as the PS3 Slim, and there are current rumors suggesting that a new base model PS5 may be coming soon. All that is to say that there's certainly a precedent for an upgrade coming sooner or later, but Sony has made it clear that if a Pro model is in the works, it'll be leaning toward the "later" side of things.

Sony hasn't officially said anything about a PS5 Pro, mind you. Its focus is directed solely toward supporting its current hardware, but that focus does inform some of the context surrounding any other potential hardware releases. Based on the company's current behavior, it would appear that a major hardware upgrade like that is still years away.
The PS5's relationship to the PS4
In an interview with Axios, PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst recently said that the company is still planning on supporting the PS4 past 2022 on a "case-by-case basis." Although he didn't specify which games would also be launching on the PS4, several announced upcoming PlayStation Studios titles such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 come to mind when thinking about the potential of cross-generational releases.

The Sims 4 is going free-to-play and you can get extras if you bought it already

The base version of The Sims 4 will go free-to-play starting October 18, publisher Electronic Arts announced. This free-to-play version will come to all platforms, including PC (via the EA app, Origin, and Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

In addition, the publisher will host a livestream on October 18 called Behind The Sims Summit, which will feature more details about its future plans for The Sims.
