Report: PlayStation Store to return May 24

psn storePSN users will have had plenty of time to read the content of Sony’s “Welcome Back” package, offered as a result of the massive data breach in April and subsequent loss of services. And most gamers will have probably already decided which free games they would like to have, offered as part of the apology. So all they need now is for the PlayStation Store to actually reopen so they can claim those freebies.

Although most other PSN services were restored this week, the virtual doors of the online store have remained firmly shut. And of course, it’s not just gamers who are waiting for normal opening hours to resume – this outage affects game developers too. They will have lost an important source of revenue with the suspension of the PlayStation Store and will be keen to see it up and running again soon. Well, it appears that there’s some good news on the subject.

According to a report on the Gamasutra website, the PlayStation Store should be back online May 24. In a memo obtained by Gamasutra that was sent by Sony to game developers and publishing partners, the Japanese company outlined a tentative publishing schedule for partners explaining when their games, expansions and other releases will become available to gamers. It appears that the gaming giant is planning to catch up with the backlog of content by doing two content pushes per week for the next two weeks.

In the memo, PSN content manager Jack Osorno said, “We thank you for your patience as we work to resume service of the PlayStation Store.”

The first push, on May 24, will include content that was originally meant for distribution on April 26. The next batch, originally set for May 3, will go live on May 27.

According to the memo, Sony is willing to be as flexible as it can if software developers have a particular issue with their newly scheduled release date. “If there are concerns, we are willing to consider adjusting the release date of your content on this schedule,” Osorno says in the memo, adding, “Adjustments will be made on a case by case basis.”

If the store does reopen next week without any glitches, and the network as a whole continues to function smoothly, then Sony will have fulfilled its promise to restore all services by the end of this month. Sit tight gamers – normal service will be resumed shortly (hopefully).

The best games on PlayStation Plus, Extra, and Premium
A person plays Crash Bandicoot using a PS5 DualSense controller.

PlayStation Plus has undergone several iterations and changes since its introduction. Originally, the service wasn't required for online play at all and rewarded subscribers with extra discounts and free monthly games. Once the PlayStation 4 generation began, it was required for online play but still offered those same benefits.

Now, PS Plus is divided into three different tiers of subscriptions. The basic tier, PS Plus Essential, still gets three games per month added, while the Extra and Premium tiers will have a varying number of games added to their catalogs. With hundreds of games already and more coming and going all the time, even the most dedicated gamer won't be able to play everything on offer. To help you get the most bang for your buck and so that no hidden gems fly under your radar, here are all the best games to play on PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium right now.
Best PS Plus Essential games
As is usually the case, everyone with the lowest tier of PS Plus gets three games this month, two with PlayStation 5 versions and one with a PS4 version. Here's what you can play this month:

MultiVersus returns in May with a new mode, Unreal 5 tweaks, and more
Key art for the relaunch of MultiVersus in 2024.

WB Games and Player First Games announced that MultiVersus, their free-to-play fighting game featuring characters from various Warner Bros.' owned properties, will return on May 28.

MultiVersus, a fighting game heavily inspired by Super Smash Bros., originally entered an Open Beta period on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox in July 2022 and became a surprise hit when I did so. I gave MultiVersus a three-and-a-half-star review and called it "fun at its core, with a take on the platform genre that is wholly unique." Interest in the game eventually dropped off hard, though, and in March 2023, WB Games announced plans to take the game offline so Player First Games could refine it for a 2024 release. It's been unplayable online since June 2023, and fans worried whether MultiVersus would ever return.
