Robbers in Maryland stole more than 100 copies of 'Call of Duty: Black Ops,' which is expected to sell millions when it goes on sale at midnight tonight.

[Updated with new info]

Call of Duty: Black Ops hits store shelves at midnight tonight and gamers everywhere are already lining up. Unable to wait, some fans have already taken matters into their own hands. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office reports that at least two men robbed a Baltimore, Maryland GameStop when it was about to close on Saturday night. Armed with guns, the duo stole four crates, or more than 100 copies of the game, along with cash and other video game systems.

The men were armed with semi-automatic handguns when they burst into the store.  The robbers forced two unlucky customers into a storage area. Luckily, no one was harmed. Police arrived at 9:20 p.m. Witnesses claim that the men fled in a white minivan or possibly a Dodge Caravan.

Call of Duty: Black Ops isn’t out there ’til Tuesday, so anybody that has it today or tomorrow shouldn’t have it,” said Monica Worrell, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, on Sunday. Worrell asked residents to call the sheriff’s office if anyone tries to sell copies of the game before the release date.

The robbery is the second of its kind in the Harford County area.  Another GameStop was robbed in a similar fashion on October 21 in Aberdeen, MD, where two armed gunmen were seen leaving in a minivan.

A big night for Black Ops

When Black Ops goes on sale, it will become one of the best-selling games of the year, likely grossing millions in its first night alone. The video game is currently ranked number one on nearly every most-anticipated chart. Pre-orders for the game have even outpaced Modern Warfare 2, which made a huge splash when it debuted around this time last year, grossing $1 billion by January.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is developed by Treyarch, the team behind CoD: Big Red One, Call of Duty 3, several Spider-Man games, and CoD: World at War.

  6. Zero at 10:48am 9th November 2010 Black ops BLOWS. I stood in like for 3 hours for a video game that has the graphics of MAYBE world at war. You can also get shot behind concrete walls, and random nades spawn everywhere.... EPIC FAIL

  8. Mw2nerd at 6:03pm 8th November 2010 any one ever think they could sell the copys for more then $60.00 People would Pay around $100-$250 for a early copy....
    1. TraumaER at 6:05am 9th November 2010 If any one does, as stated above, they would be dumb to play it early live, but I'm sure that if the stores get sold out in an area these guys could make bank selling them on ebay. You can just hear the kids, "But mooooommm... I want Call of Duty: Black Ops for Christmas!" and then the grandpa says "You'll shoot your eye out kid!" Suffice it to say who knows what these two will end up doing with them. It did say they ran off with hardware as well. Maybe they had some buddies who wanted the game, but didn't want to pay and said something like "It'd be cool if someone would just steal that for me" I don't know these are just ramblings of a crazy man
  9. TVGizmo at 10:53am 8th November 2010 Stealing is stealing! Enough of this crap goes on, software developers will stop wasting their time.
  10. @perchboy at 10:27am 8th November 2010 add lewbis2k9 on ps3 to get hacks and 10million coins 4r call of duty black ops :)
  11. Castro at 8:46am 8th November 2010 Considering the xbox version was leaked a day or so ago and there are videos of it being hacked, i dunno if they can pin this theft to everyone who plays it a day early lol.
  12. Dave at 8:38am 8th November 2010 Anyone that thinks the game is being played on live is a fool
  13. Jesse Istre at 9:25am 8th November 2010 the game has been out on p2p and scene groups for over a week. I currently have it installed on my PC. But I assure you , no one is using this game live before it launches. Otherwise your Box will get blacklisted.
  14. Jay at 9:24am 8th November 2010 at 50 bucks a pop for original copy, thats 5000$ for just 100, thats just as good as cash.

    1. Dan at 8:23am 8th November 2010 They did take the cash...read the article, idiot. And when everyone gets their game on midnight, you'll look on and see some people have already been playin for over a week already.

  17. MR. Fiddles at 8:05am 8th November 2010 black ops will suck
    1. Killa at 5:01pm 9th November 2010 i agree to the maximum, since it is a free for all multiplayer game, there will be a huge number of boosters and high ranked players on the first week you will start to doubt the game and its purpose.
    2. Gordie Andrew Mark Parisien at 4:13pm 17th November 2010 I do not agree with you do you know how to play call of duty i think you don't

  20. harking at 7:51am 8th November 2010 As soon as they register to play online it will be an interesting event in a couple of hours. Wonder if they have Kinect ;)
    1. @JeffreyVC at 4:00am 9th November 2010 That's a good question. I'm not sure what Microsoft's policy is when it detects a user has a fake game or a stolen game. Obviously, there would be some early activations of Black Ops because of reviewers and such.
  21. xlsof at 7:50am 8th November 2010 Who says video games can't teach ?
    1. susa at 6:11am 9th November 2010 you live in a tiny box don't you
  22. ASFurm at 7:50am 8th November 2010 Microsoft is going to see who is using the game prior to its release... Fools! Other than that they can sell them after the release for big $$.
