So You Wanna Be a Game Consultant?

So you play lots of video games. So you have lots of opinions about them. So what?! Do you have what it takes to be a paid game consultant?

Digital Trends contributor Scott Steinberg is the managing director of Embassy Multimedia Consultants, one of a tiny handful of real-world video game consultancies that help studios get their games designed, refined, and moved to market.

And you’re thinking to yourself, "Gosh, that must be a posh gig! Sit around, play video games all day, complain about them, make suggestions—I could do that!"

Not so fast, buddy. In an interview for GameSpy, Scott sheds some light on what video game consultants really do—it’s not about playing games all day, racking up scores, and designing cool weapons and levels: it’s about making games playable, helping them stand out in the market place, adding content and elements which draw players in and keep them playing, adding fresh ideas rather than re-hashed points and bits cribbed from other titles. Scott sheds light on what video game consultants actually do…all without committing one of industry’s biggest sins: naming names. If you truly think you have a knack for improving games, it’s an interesting read.
