Sony PS3 Could Come Without a Hard Drive

Although it was always sort of assumed that the new Sony Playstation 3 would come with an integrated hard drive, that might not be the case.

In the latest issue of the Japanese magazine Famitsu, Sony Computer Entertainment’s chief technology officer Masayuki Chatani says the company has not decided whether they would add a hard drive to the Sony Playstation 3 gaming console. Chatani seems to think that users will want to add their own hard drives, specifically with larger storage than Sony could offer at the PS3’s price point.

At this year’s E3 show, Sony showed attendees that a detachable 2.5-inch hard drive could be added to the underside of the PS3 giving the gamer more options with their new console. It was always assumed by the press that this hard drive would be a part of the overall package, although Sony has never officially stated the hard drive would be included.

When we first reported information regarding the new Playstation 3, we were worried that the system would cost around the $500 mark, which makes sense for a console with a large hard drive. But since then, we have learned that Sony will be trying to introduce the Playstation 3 at a price point comparable to when the Playstation 2 first came out.

If you want to see some game trailers for the new Playstation 3, check out our E3 video section. They are mixed in with game trailers from other consoles, so you will have to do a bit of searching.
