Sony PS3 to Use Samsung 512Mb XDR DRAM

The Samsung 512Mb XDR DRAM can transmit data with up to 9.6 GigaBytes per second, 12 times faster than DDR400 memory and 6 times faster than leading RDRAM (PC 800) devices.

It uses advanced 90-nanometer memory technology to achieve a peak operating speed of 4.8Gbps at 1.8 volts.

The memory device targets high-performance broadband applications that need advanced digital imaging or 3D graphics, such as the latest game consoles, digital TVs, high-end servers and premium workstations.

XDR DRAM from Samsung will be adopted for Sony Computer Entertainment’s next generation computer entertainment system, PLAYSTATION3.

    1. Dan Gaul at 10:25pm 3rd November 2009 Xbox has more games, but gets the red ring of death frequently. I'm on my 3rd one. I want to like my PS3 so much. It has such huge potential.

    1. Ian Bell at 8:37am 3rd November 2009 I think the PS3 does have better RAM. The Xbox 360 has better games though, and more of them.
  4. eminem_shot-yaa at 1:12pm 1st November 2009 but what is this compared to xbox 360 which type of ram does a xbox 360 have and would ps3 have an edge over xbox 360 in anyway because of its ram?
    1. Ian Bell at 5:04pm 1st November 2009 The Xbox 360 uses: 512 MB GDDR3 RAM (700 MHz) (Up to 512 MB GDDR3 system RAM (700 MHz) plus 10 MB embedded DRAM (eDRAM) frame buffer), shared with GPU. The PS3 uses 256 MB XDR RAM (3.2GHz) dedicated and 256MB GDDR3 (700MHz) for the graphics.
