Sony Stops Production Of The PSX

Production of Sony's PSX multipurpose entertainment console, which combines a PlayStation 2's gaming capabilities with a digital video recorder and DVD burner, is on hold.

Sony’s public relations representatives explain the halt as a temporary measure, taken to manage Sony’s stock of the expensive device. Production will begin again at an as-yet-undecided time, once stock already in the retail pipeline decreases — officially, it’s analogous to Nintendo’s temporary halt in GameCube production last year.

The PSX, released in Japan last December, comes in two models. One is priced at more than $700, the other costs more than $900, so demand may be expected to slacken somewhat after the first wave of early adopters purchases the system. The PSX sold some 100,000 units in its first week pf release, Sony’s Ken Kutaragi confirmed last December, but sales have slowed down in the four months since then.
