Sony to cut PS2 price by 20% in Japan

Sony Computer Entertainment said it will cut the retail price of its popular PlayStation 2 game console in Japan by about 20% on Nov. 13 ahead of the year-end shopping season.

The latest price cut, the second of its kind on the game console this year, will bring down the price to 19,800 yen from 25,000 yen, SCE said. SCE is a unit of Sony Corp.

The price cut will involve a change in the color of the game console’s body to semi-clear black from black.

Global shipments of PlayStation 2 have totaled more than 62 million units, including about 14.2 million units in Japan, according to the company.

SCE also said it will lower the suggested retail price of its PS2BB Pack, an online game-capable version of PlayStation 2, to 29,800 yen from 35,000 yen on Nov. 13.
