Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune has a writer, director

The adventures of Nathan Drake appear to be moving closer to the big screen, as writer/director David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) has officially signed on to write the screenplay and direct the adaptation of the PlayStation 3 game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. If that sounds a little bit like déjà vu, it is because Russell was already attached to the project once before, but backed out when he and Columbia Pictures were unable to agree on terms.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Russell will begin work on Uncharted immediately. Currently, the director is attached to adapt the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which will go into hiatus.

Developer Naughty Dog’s game follows Nathan Drake, a descendant of Sir Francis Drake, who has followed in his ancestor’s footsteps and become an explorer and treasure hunter. In the game, Drake, an Indiana-Jones-like character, is seeking the lost treasure of El Dorado with the help of his friend Sully, and the obligatory love interest along for the ride, in this case journalist Elena Fisher. Columbia had originally been pushing for a 2011 release date, but that will likely change.

Let the speculation begin on who will play Nathan Drake.  Sound off below!
