Windows Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver Ships

Microsoft's Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows has shipped, enabling Windows users to game with wireless Xbox 360 accessories.

Some Windows gamers will rejoice to hear that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows is now available at retailers, enabling Windows-based gamers to use wireless Xbox 360 accessories (like game controllers, steering wheels, and headsets) on PCs running Windows XP SP1 or higher (including Windows Vista). The wireless receiver is available for $19.99 as a standalone unit, or for $59.99 bundled with an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows.

Microsoft says any game which sports the Games for Windows brand can natively support Xbox 360 accessories where applicable; in addition, any game which enables gamepad support should be able to map button configurations to Xbox 360 accessories via the wireless receiver. When Microsoft Launched “Games for Windows – Live” for Windows Vista later this year (launch titles will include Shadowrun,UNO, and Halo 2 for Windows Vista), Windows users will be able to use the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset in conjunction with the Wireless Receiver to talk with gamers, chat with friends via MSN Messenger and other applications which can take voice input. The Wireless Receiver can also be used to provide from-the-coach access to Windows Media Center.

The Wireless Receiver can handle up to four Wireless Controllers and four Wireless Headsets simultaneously; it has a range of about 30 feet and connects to a PC via a six-foot USB cable. And Microsoft wants everyone to know the receivers are a great gift idea for the PC gamers on your lists…assuming, you know, you can get them to disengage long enough to notice something new in the room.
