Blizzard's third World of Warcraft expansion has entered private beta: soon players will be worgens and goblins and exploring a newly shattered WOW universe.
Blizzard’s MMORPG World of Warcraft is about to get another chapter: Blizzard has announced that the game’s third expansion pack, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, has entered private beta. Players who signed up for the testing release via their battle.net accounts will start to see invitations to sample the latest expansion pack, due to launch to the general public later this year.
“Our focus with Cataclysm has been to build on the knowledge we’ve gained through the previous expansions to deliver the best, most compelling World of Warcraft content for our players to date,” said Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime, in a statement. “Gathering focused feedback during the beta test will go a long way in helping us reach that goal when we launch Cataclysm.”
Cataclysm proposes to change the face of the virtual world of Azeroth, turning long-stable areas reshaped and filled with whole new adventures via a planet-shattering apocalypse brought on by the return of the Dragon Aspect Deathwing. The expansion pack will also introduce two new playable races (goblins and the wolf-like worgen), push the player level cap up to 85, roll out new locations and levels of power, and let players face off against Deathwing in a final fight for the fate of the world.
Blizzard hasn’t announced pricing or an availability date for Cataclysm; previous World of Warcraft expansion packs have been relatively inexpensive on their own, with the company also offering combined bundles for new players and package incentives. The first two WOW expansions—The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King—were top-selling PC gaming titles when they were released; Blizzard is no doubt hoping to repeat that success with Cataclysm.
