I am a college professor at a university in California. I am also a casual gamer too (ironically I play WoW in moderation with some other professional-types around North Ameerican continent) so I can speak directly to this issue. Teaching in the class brings many challenges as well as counseling my students over the course of a term. I have had several students disclose to me their obsession with WoW. And yes, these students have done and/or doing poorly in their course work. I am a psychologist (clinical by training) and the traditional approach to addiction treatment is being revisited when the focus of treatment is gaming versus substance, i.e, alcoholism, etc. The growing trend does concern me and I do see a direct correlation in poor academic performance, grades and gaming. However, more research is needed in this growing area. My sample is under 100 students and has only spanned 1 academic year. More work is needed to be done in this area. Thanks for reading and comments are appreciated.

They should teach a class on World of Warcraft: Tatics and time management

That way people can get their wow fix and still try to stay in school! :P

Can't argue with that, really. When I was in college, Counter-strike was my downfall. ;P I didn't drop out, and I didn't get horrible grades, but I certainly could have done much better had I more self control. Of course, if it wasn't Counter-strike, it was partying, girls and just going out. College students will be college students.

Perhaps, however, they should be teaching more profound material instead of attempting to indoctrinate our children with liberal ideals. Maybe this is why students aren't interested in their studies. Just a thought.
