I think that the specific idea of BANNING used games is a false rumor. But I'm willing to bet there will be a registration concept put into play that forces you to register games to your gamertag. Basically the same way that the downloadable games work only with physical media as well.

It's not totally farfetched. One way it could happen is if they sold games with a "Registration Code" inside the box, which requires you to register the game to your gamertag. So you can play the game on any console that is signed in to your gamertag.

When you SELL the game the new owner simply enters that same code and it transfers the ownership over to their gamertag. It would no longer work on your system but you wouldn't care because you SOLD IT, remember?

So the used game industry wouldn't be hurt by it and could still function as normal. The only people I could see this effecting are those who have been pirating their 360 games. Which is the exact reason why Microsoft or Sony would implement this concept, and a ridiculous reason to be angry about it.

Thats cold man. I don't know about your past, but I was once a struggling young not-even-a-teen who had to scrimp and save all year long to buy one game and if my parents were feeling generous I might get another at christmas and my birthday.

Seeing as how one of the largest age groups of gamers are the under 18 still living with mommy and daddy crowd it's a ludicrous to think that "broke gamers" don't matter.

And for every spoiled brat who gets every game they ask for since their parents can't afford the time to actually spend with them, there are ten normal kids who consider themselves lucky to own three games a year, new or otherwise.

That isn't even scratching the surface of the 20-30 something who is laid off right now and has to save to get their game on.

Don't be such a condescending jerk just cause you have money to blow. Gamestop is one of the many ways many of us try to save money to live within our means.

And as a further side argument to keeping used games, many times Producing companies stop making copies of a game and Gamestop and other used venders are the only place to get a copy.

I totally understand what you are saying, but just because you got ripped off (and others are) doesn't mean that used games are not beneficial to the gaming economy. Believe it or not, there are a group of people that wait to buy things used, because thats all they can afford. And if Microsoft can get a used gaming system into the hands of a user who wouldn't have one otherwise, then they benefit. Why? Because that user might also download affordable games through Xbox Live, they might by used games from Gamestop, and ultimately they become a customer.

I really have disliked the idea of a game being tied to a system since I first started hearing about it back in the 90's (then we were talking about computers and software that could only be installed once). Then, about a decade later that same company entered into the world of video game consoles...(any one following me?) Funny thing though, that same company that was doing that back then is still doing it today on our computer. This is a huge pain if your harddrive crashes.

I like to let my friends and family borrow my games for them to play, hoping to inspire them to buy the same games so that we can play together. I HATE downloadable games for that reason alone. Don't get me wrong, I have downloaded a ton of them on my respective systems, but given the choice I would rather take a hard copy that can be transfered rather than a digital copy. What if I'm going over to my buddies place and want to show him that sweet new game I just got? If they move on to a system where games are tied to consoles, I have to move the whole console with me, even if they have the same console themselves!

My point:
#1) Microsoft is most likely looking at linking games to their next console (perhaps there will be a small rewritable area on the center ring of the disc, a single bit is all that would be needed, only the size of a pin prick).
#2 WORST IDEA EVER. IF they implement it, it will forever be a black mark on the history of video games, on par with or worse than ET the game, the Crash of 83', Virtual Boy, and the Red Ring of Death.

I hope you don't actually believe what you just said. Used games don't benefit anyone but Gamestop, not the game industry. This would be a great way to get Gamestop to pay a higher premium on what they are paying to the gamers, because right now, they are tripling, most of the time quadrupling what they pay out for a used game. I took a game last month to Gamestop, they paid me $2 for decent game, they turned around and sold it for $29.99, 1500% profits, no wonder he wants XBOX 720 to stay the same.

//RANT//
Quite frankly, I'd own a lot less games if it weren't for the used and rental game markets. There are some games I pre-purchase and buy sight unseen... Halo, COD, Resistance, etc. They never let me down (much hehe). But many others I won't waste my money on without trying first... and if they are good, I buy. If they suck (or maybe its just not my kind of game), they go back. So if the game distributors/console makers go down this road, I see this potentially hurting them or at least not benefiting them to the degree they think it will - I simply will not spend money on untested games... been burned to many times (not just on games - PC software, music albums, etc) with software purchases that left me feeling ripped off. I currently own between 80-90 XBOX 360 games. Many are the deluxe version (Halo helmet, Reach statues, COD rover, etc). When the product is quality and has value, the market will respond. But many of these I bought through other channels (Gamestop, Gamefly) and would not own at all if it weren't from them. And for the good ones that offer extra purchasable content, I often buy that also. And sometimes (often times?) I miss out on exclusive content that is free with purchase, but has to be bought if the item it purchased second hand. I like this method - buy it first hand and get the core game and some extra stuff "free". This extra stuff may vary depending on what version you purchase. By second hand, get the core game but not the extra stuff. Some of that may be purchasable, some maybe not or maybe not for an extended time. OK, that seems fair. But I should be able to rent, buy and resell my items if I so desire. This whole idea of every person needs to "license" a copy of a (song/video/game/other digital item) to use it and can't actually own/transfer/sell/rent it is ludicrous. Consumers don't think that way and in the end will be the ones that direct the future... so why not work within that mentality and take advantage of it.
//ENDRANT//

Of course the CEO of Gamestop would say that they don't think they're going to lose half it's profits. How is this even a story? There are two groups that would suffer if used games were blocked, first would be used game retailers and second would be poor gamers. But like the article said used games are frequently discounted as little as $5 so gamers won't be put out too much more. People don't buy consoles because of Gamestop, if they choose to stock their shelves with something else there's always a Wal*Mart around the corner.

I think it would be stupid to block used games too. Gamestop, Best Buy and other retailers help get game consoles into homes, yet the margins on consoles are very low, it's game sales that make them more money. So if you hurt retailers game sales (and in this case $1 billion worth to Gamestop) then what incentive will they have to sell the consoles when they could be using shelf space for other higher margin products.

And on another note, I have been hearing rumors that the next-gen consoles could ditch hard copy games all together and stick solely to a downloadable model like Steam. I call BS on this as well. There are still plenty of homes that do not have broadband, or if they do have broadband, they could have slow download speeds and this would be cumbersome. Not to mention that Comcast and other ISP's would go nuts if everyone was downloading 2GB+ files on a regular basis.
