Earlier this morning, gamers were greeted with a notice that stated Xbox Live “Users may experience difficulties with the following services:
- Signing into Xbox LIVE from an Xbox console
- Signing into Xbox LIVE from Xbox.com
It soon became apparent that the “may experience” line should read “will experience,” as service seems to be down for everyone. The first official notice that Microsoft was aware of the issue came around 8am PST, but earlier posts show that some may have been affected earlier this morning. Normally this sort of thing would be filed away under “minor annoyance,” but after Sony set the bar so astronomically high when it comes to service interruptions, the gaming community has good cause to begin to stretch their collective “freak out” muscles.
No details have been released yet as to the cause of the outage, which Xbox Support has tweeted that they are investigating: “We are aware of the issues some users are having with Xbox LIVE and are actively investigating. Thanks for your patience.”
The odds are heavily stacked in favor of this being absolutely nothing at all. A mere hiccup in the service that will be resolved in the next few hours at most. But those that own both the Xbox 360 and a PS3 may be feeling that small trickle of fear creeping down their backs after Sony’s problems last year.
We’ll update this post when we know more.
Update (1:09pm PST): It looks like service is coming back for many, but others are still left without XBL connectivity, and Microsoft has yet to explain the outage. Zune service on XBL is also down for most.
Update (1:49pm PST): Xbox Live’s Support has tweeted that XBL is back up and running and most, if not all, members should have access to the service–with one terrible exception. Brace yourselves people… the TMZ app is down (for some)! The horror, the horror. No word on what caused the interruptions yet, or when you will next be able to get all the most recent news about Tom Cruise and Katy Holmes, but most should have no problems from here on out.
