Not only do Visceral Games and EA want to scare the crap out of you with Dead Space 2, they want the game to be so scary and messed up that your mom will be a bit disappointed in you for playing it. As anyone that has ever been, or even known a teenager can attest, it is a brilliant strategy.
In the trailer below, EA lured several sweet and innocent looking mothers into a focus group for Dead Space 2, perhaps with promises of debuting the newest Hallmark or Lifetime movie of the week, where some plucky person does something amazing and all their hopes and dreams are rewarded thanks to the genuine and honest group of amazing people around them. Instead they watched as beleaguered hero Isaac Clarke brutally dismembers the twisted corpses of former humans who are trying to rip him apart, while also fighting off increasingly powerful bouts of insanity. It is not quite the same thing.
Check out some of the sadly hilarious reactions below in the trailer “Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2″. The game is due out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on January 25.
[Warning: May not be suitable for all ages or mothers]
then maybe she should be a parent and not buy it
then she shouldn’t play it then
neither should your under aged children
then maybe she should be a parent and not buy it
Walk away, turn off your tvs.
Very cool
I am 17, and I consider myself something of an expert on games like this one (absurdly violent and gory).
This ad campaign is absolutely brilliant! It perfectly appeals to the market the game is made for: young men who are independent enough from their mothers to make their own choices, but not so much as to escape their criticism and judgment.
So many of the most popular games are frowned upon by parents (and the middle aged in general), that it has become something of a challenge to out-do the last. And many of the games that parents hate are very popular and appealing (Grand Theft Auto, Gears of War, Call of Duty, Resident Evil, ect.)
Although this game's campaign may not help with the age restrictions debate, it's not aimed at kids. The mothers in the video all look a fair bit older than 40, and few 50 year old's have 14 year old sons. The concept is "Your mother's going to hate it" but not be able to do anything about it. Anyone too young would have to depend on their parents to buy it, let alone play it with them around.
Great ad, made me jump on the web and share it on Facebook. I plan to buy this game, if only to show my support for effective, creative ad campaigns, as opposed to the rest of the garbage that constitutes the marketing industry.
I enjoy how you're an expert.
What a twat.
I think if your an adult you should be able to play whatever game you want. However, I have a problem with under aged children being allowed to play this type of game. There are plenty of other options for video games that don't involve such grotesque displays.
haha. I am sure my mom would freak out too. This is fuel for the groups out there pushing restrictions on games like this.
I'm not sure who the target market is, but as a 30+ year old male adult who owns his own home (hence I don't live in mom's basement), I did find the ad amusing. Not amusing enough to buy the game, but amusing enough to laugh at the ad.
And yes, my mom would hate that game.
