Microsoft Zune HD vs. Apple iPod Touch

iPod Touch vs. Zune HD

We pit both corporate offspring against each other to see which reigns supreme when the cards fall.

Microsoft has made no attempt to hide which trendy little MP3 player lay in the sights of the recently released Zune HD: Apple’s iPod Touch. Apple turned the market upside down when it released the Touch back in 2007, and while Microsoft let its own Zune line languish for two years before responding, the silver bullet Microsoft has finally offered up has clearly been engineered to drop Apple. But will it succeed? With both players in hand, we ran down the key advantages of each to determine which truly makes the ultimate portable video device.

Price

Microsoft may have had Apple firmly trounced in the price department when it lifted the lid on the ZuneHD pricing back in August, but since Apple responded with a price drop on the Touch in September, the gap has narrowed significantly. Apple technically holds the lowest entry-level price with the 8GB iPod Touch, marked at $199, but only because Microsoft’s cheapest Zune sports 16GB of memory, and sells for $220. (Apple no longer offers a model in that size capacity, but you can still snag a 16GB iPod Touch through Amazon for $248).

Apple iPod Touch vs. Microsoft Zune HD

The two players only match up head-to-head in the 32GB size, where Apple’s iPod sells for $299 and the ZuneHD sells for $290, and almost-negligible price difference for most folks debating between the two. Apple’s top-shelf 64GB player sells for $399, but Microsoft offers no comparable ZuneHD in that capacity. Although Apple has the cheapest entry-level model, we have to hand the price war victory to Microsoft, which has managed to skim just enough off the price to make non-Apple-devotees look twice before leaping.

Winner: Microsoft

Display

The generous 3.5-inch screen on Apple’s iPod Touch has long made it the de facto player of choice for on-the-go video, but Microsoft set out to challenge that lead with the ZuneHD. Not by offering a bigger screen, but a better one. Although the ZuneHD screen measures a slightly smaller 3.3 inches diagonally, it’s uses cutting edge OLED technology, which delivers brightness and contrast unlike anything you can find in a LCD. It’s the same technology that sizzled before our eyes on the Samsung Impression and it looks even more impressive here, where Microsoft has crammed more pixels (480 by 272) into a similar space for a crisper look. You’ll really only need to watch Microsoft’s demo video to realize that this is no gimmick – it absolutely shimmers with color. If this thing were a miniature TV, it would be the Pioneer Elite Kuro Pro 111FD.

Apple iPod Touch vs. Microsoft Zune HD

Will you notice the lack of 0.2 inches diagonally? Absolutely. And technically, Apple has more pixels (480 x 320), too. But we think the brilliance of an OLED display more than makes up for it.

Winner: Microsoft

Battery Life

No matter how small or how capable, a personal media player does no good if you’re constantly running back to the wall to charge it, making battery life one of the most important specs that you’ll never truly appreciate until you take a device into the field. In this department, Apple didn’t have it half bad to begin with, boasting 30 hours of music playback and six hours of video playback for the iPod Touch. That’s a very respectable three movies, provided you use modest settings. But Microsoft has one upped Apple here as well, claiming the Zune HD will deliver 33 hours of music and 8.5 hours of video. However slight another three hours of music may look, the extra 2.5 hours of video stands out to us as a significant advantage – and it makes sense, given that OLED displays are more efficient than their LCD counterparts. Even if you don’t want to watch Titanic back to back, the extended battery life should allow you to pump up brightness past the most miserly settings to a more pleasant level.

Apple iPod Touch vs. Microsoft Zune HD

Although most PMP owners we know tend to leave their players overnight for a little R&R when it’s charging time, Microsoft claims the Zune HD will fill up faster, too: two hours when fast charging from a wall adapter, three when suckling from a computer’s USB port. Apple claims the iPod Touch can fast charge to 80 percent capacity in two hours, but requires four for a full charge.

Winner: Microsoft

    zune marketplace is cheaper
  • Cheaper for what? Music or apps?
  • Blop123
Both, apps are free and music goes from 78-99MS. Movies and TV shows are about the same.

    Watch this video people!!!
And i think it is unbiased!!!You can be the judge over which is better...

  • Señor
This Comparison seemed quite bias. Not the video.
  • The video seemed to be a bit bias. The last three comparisons all took points away from the Zune in part because of the apps. They dinged the Zune on all three categories in part because of that.
  • Marth Eliwood
Hey it is easier to get Zune for music cuz u dont have to sync to only one computer.....and u can download music for free like frostwire...limewire....bearshare...etc.
  • LOL
HAHA THIS IS TERRIBLE VERY BIASSSSS

FOR ONE, THE ZUNE IS SMALLER WITH A SMALL SCREEN SO NOT THAT GREAT PLUS IPOD TOUCH IS THINNER THATS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WEIGHT!!!!! WHO WANTS TO PUT A FAT THING IN YOUR POCKET PLUS THE IPOD HAS A ROUND DESIGN WHILE THE ZUNE HD FEELS LIKE A BOX IN YOUR HAND HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THIS IS SO BIAS TO ZUNE I BET THIS IS MICROSOFT WHO WROTE THIS OR PAID THESE PEOPLE TO WRITE PLUS IPOD HAS THE APP STORE LOL AND THEY CALL IT A DRAWWWWW LOLOLOLOLOL THERES WAY TOO MANY HATERS OF THE IPOD TOUCH LETS READ SOME UNBIASED REVIEWS shaLL WE????

    zune is making apps
and the zune Hd is axactly the same shape and size as the ipod touch
besides microsoft will never match the # of costomers that apple has

no, the zune hd not zune and oh wow 2 inchs diagnally with an HDscreen how do u like them apples
  • no
im afraid that the zune hd doesnt feel like a brick. the old zunes were, but this one?? no. and btw, the zune hd is actually quite thin. the difference is hardly noticeable
  • justin
heh this is the 1st gen of the zune hd and what gen is the ipod touch at???o ya the 3rd and here is something about the apps they just started making them so....give the microsoft 4 years that apple has had to improve the ipod touch and then lets see because right now the zune is keeping up with the ipod touch with there "1ST GENERATION" and the ipod is on their 3rd generation so a fair match huh?
  • reinventnv
dude the zune hardly has any app's the zune is so dead no one has even taken the time to jailbreak them
  • atomicyoyo
In reality this review is not very biased at all. The opinion of the author can be clearly seen, however he lays out the facts of each one and uses facts to show his opinion. I like both the ipod touch and the zune hd. They are both very nice devices. Why are you getting so worked up about it? Just use your ipod touch and leave it at that
  • allen246
waaaa? the zune is only 0.2 inches thicker! and i bet you dont even have the zune if you think it feels like a box in your hand! im not saying that the zune is perfect, because it doesnt even have a speaker, but its not crap, like you made it sound
  • Danacon
why all the caps? you cant talk normal? the difference in thickness is like .2mm something nobody would really notice that much once use to it. Your making it sound like its very thick and bulky which is not the case. I have both for Appz the I-Pod has it beat hands down, unless MS oppens a app developer kit for people to make them but for music and Video(BIgtime) the Zune wins by a long shot.
The size difference is not that noticible the weight is a little though.
  • Hugo
Actually the Zune HD's kit you're talking about is $39.99 so yeah... way cheaper.
  • gordon47
Stupid review , apple is always better.
  • metalhead25
Why? Just because everyone has an ipod and you want to conform to popular culture? I'm sick and tired of people talking about how ipod is better than zune. Why? because it has all those apps. Come on. Half of those apps have no use what so ever. An app where you can pretend to shoot a gun, or where you can pretend to drink alcohol. What kind of moron would pay for something like that. I just wish everyone would stop putting these stupid comments saying things like "apple is always better than zune," and not even giving a good reason to support their ideas.
  • AppleFails
I agree 100%. Unfortunately, Apple's products are retard-friendly, hence, since most of the population is retarded, you get the majority being Apple fans. As an example of what I'm talking about, look at how long it took for them to add copy/paste to the iPhone. It's pathetic when you realize that almost every other smart phone had this ability at launch. Apple is nothing special; it's time for people to realize this company is garbage and stop buying their products.
  • NadaLemming
ROTFL.. as someone who cut their teeth on BASIC and IBM ps/2 computers I fully agree with your analysis of the general population!
  • reinventnv
dude its all business apples taking their time because they gotta perfect their shit plus their known for quality and they dont have as much money as microsoft
  • henry.
you are the man. good name too.
  • jonny cash
apple is better because it invented this crap then everyone went in and copied them you dont like it when people copy you do you???????????
  • Not to be a stickler, but Apple did not invent the mp3 player. There were many out before the iPod. None of them were as elegant in the whole solution (player and software).
  • Dena C.
he speaks the truth... apple has just made it's own niche in the MP3 player world-- and they have very appealing marketing-- the zune is a beyond worthy competitor. microsoft needs to step up their own advertising campaigns for most of their products, because apple brings the flash and jazz to its commercials

  • metalhead25
You have yet to mention anything about what it is about the touch that makes it better than the zune HD. Here we have another example of some ipod fanboy who has no legitimacy behind his comments.
  • rojohombre
Well, for one, how about a lack of the audible format support? Don't get me wrong, I'm getting a zune. The oled screen is too much to let pass by. But, I did find the lack of audible support ridiculous. I primarily use my mp3 player for podcasts, listening to my own ripped music, etc... Coincidentally, it lacked audible support also. It would've been nice to listen to books also, but hey, you get used to not having everything you want. But, I would've thought that since MS wanted a I-touch killer, they would've included this in the formula. The screen and the wireless syncing are the 2 real reasons I'm getting zune over touch. but you asked for a reason. I couldn't resist giving you one. :-)
  • anthonyspt
Zune has Audible support, even the old Zunes have Audible support. (Microsoft's codecs were what Audible was originally built around as they were the only solid DRM mechanism that book publishers would allow to be used when Audible was first launch in the late 90s.)
  • hellsya
oo wow that was 2000. this is now. they didnt come up with the zune or the zune HD or the zune or anything else they came up with the ipod
  • killer
this has to be one of the dumbest things I've heard, microsoft copied apple? gtfo

exactly last time i checked they were for listening to music not apps
  • awsomeboy
i todily agry why do you need all these stupig apps all i need is something that i can lisen to music on i woundnt even use the apps because there retarted.they dont even do anything. yha i want to pretend to drink beer. how fun is that.i think zune hd s are better. apple didnt even put radio on ipod tuches everyone wants to lisen to radio. like if you go to a workout place you would need radio to lisen to the tvs but ipod tuches cant do that
  • Not all apps for the iPhone are silly fart/burp/drink apps. There are really useful ones.

For example, I have a SSH application, pingdom application, news applications (yahoo, nytimes), google, twitter, IM, Yelp, dropbox, movie times, and more. All non-music/video related an all extremely useful to me.
  • pro zune
yes finaly i agree with pro zune bt not to say that the ipod is bad bt it freezes all the time like i had one for 2 weeks and i had to return it because it crashed all the time now ive had a zune for 2 months and it hasnt even slowed down
  • reinventnv
thats why we jail break.... and stop being a rigid ruler
  • AppleFails
Funny how Apple couldn't even get there act together to give the 3rd gen a camera. Yeah, clearly Apple is always better. I'm so sick of Apple fanboys who can't see past their own nose, much less see how Apple really has nothing to offer. 75,000+ apps? Most of these are garbage, and this is coming from someone who looked for apps that they would buy if they got an iPod Touch. Needless to say, the ZuneHD is a far superior PMP.
  • AppleFailsHard!
Ya I'm tired of those fan-boys too, them with their i-pods saying they are awesome and they are the best and talking about the "Apps"(why do you even call it that, i know it means applications but WHY?)while Zune has Audio surf ! ! ! ! ! AUDIOSURF!!!!!!!!

  • gordon47
Come on !! What is the big deal with zune hd ?? HD radio whatever... and apple is better when it comes to sound quality and music in general... And for App store... how can u say it has useless apps?? The truth to be told there are some stupid apps... but in general the app store has more than 75,000 apps and a lot of them are very useful... (Zune HD is a good PMP but cannot be as good as iPod touch ) .
  • metalhead25
Look. I'm not saying that ipod is a terrible PMP, but I am tired of people saying that there is no comparison between the ipod touch and thezune HD just because of the apps. Sometimes ipod fans can be just as annoying as Twilight fans (and thats saying allot). If you look at it from a music and video standpoint, zune HD probably is better. Between the zune pass, HD radio, an OLED screen, and 720p tv output, zune really doesn't leave ipod with much to brag about. The touch is more like a hand-held computer than a PMP. As far as sound quality, I really don't see a difference. If you can please help me see (or hear) a difference. Because I sure as hell can't hear it.
  • rojohombre
Hey dude, I have to agree with you on this note. Every single difference you just spoke of, is the very reason I'm going to get a zune instead of a touch. I mean come on people, he's right. these products are being marketed as PMPs, not mini computers. so let's judge them accordingly. what I think is so funny is the fact that the touch is essentially an i-phone without the calling function, and yet, you want to spend almost as much for it! wow. doesn't make sense to me. must just be me I guess. if I'm going to buy a product, i buy the best for the money. and in this instance, I'm sorry (mainly cuz I hate the evil empire that is MS. lol), but the zune is the best product for the money in my opinion.
  • sher
I am going to bring my zune hd intrhe store it sucks not much application and i cant use internet as slow and connecting forever...i am going to chasnge with apple more better...goodluck all with your thoughts.
  • Real Life
An Ipod Touch also has an English tutor application to help you with your atrocious writing. Sorry, but if you buy a Zune, Microsoft assumes you are in fact Intelligent Life (it says so in the User Agreement) so you shouldn't need one.
  • Tyler
Too bad about your idea but ZuneHD is way better. Ipod touch can not compare to the device. Apple is a fruit and the company if fruity and anyone who owns and Ipod and knows about ZuneHD is a fruit too. ZuneHD is superior to a fruit since the name. Zune is its own original name there is no word in the English dictionary using the word Zune but iPod was used from two words I and Pod. Get the picture? IPod copies other companies and adds good looks to it. They SUCK

actually it's called the iPod touch. the itouch is a completely different mp3 player. nice try.
  • appleneedslife
Apple is so way not better with sound quality and I really don't get this thing with the apps. One of the touch's big things is e-mail which is nice but if you have a gmail account you can just go to google.com and do e-mail there-that is unless your to lazy to hit 4 extra buttons.
  • reinventnv
dude what are you talking about the apple ipod is capable of playing wav files which is fully fledged un-conpressed music .... now if the zune could play flac then it would be another story.... but no ones got the space for all that now its all about how much crap you can load onto it.. and besides if its higher quality you want then get better earphones or use your computer dont come up with ignorant replies ir answers that defy what is due to common knowledge =)
  • rojohombre
ok, you obviously work for apple, know someone who works for apple, or are just an apple fanatic...heheheh...just kidding with ya dude. seriously man, if you're gonna lay down such that much coin, just get an i-phone cuz that's really what an i-touch is, minus the phone, at almost the same price. as for your remarks about the zune features. don't you think all the options it has should be factored in it's quality? the i-touch apps are cool I give you. but the zune is more than likely going to have some good ones too, but I don't care about that. because this is supposed to be a PMP not a "everything to everyone" kind of device. everybody jumps on MS for wanting to be so prominent in every aspect of our lives (and yes, I am one of those jumpers. heheheh), but Apple is just as bad at it, and this is a case of that very situation. they can't just give you a device that connects you to your media (like the zune did), oh no, they have to throw in the "our apps are better than yours" thing. uuuh, of course they are, the touch has been around longer, so they should be. bottom line, zune is better quality for the price. nuff said. :-)
  • hells ya
they are ooh direct tv wow we need that and micro cars zune is developing apps to they might b more useful or not im not saying the ipod sucks or anything but the zune HD is better thats an opinion
  • zune owner/ipod touch owner :D
if you did some research you would know that the zune hd was rated better in sound quality over the ipod touch
  • listenup
ha ha dude the zune hd is way way way better then the ipod touch. ipod touch is kinda old now anyways the zune hd looks and preforms way better. i got my zune and all my friends with the ipod touch admit the zune is way way way better. dont hate!!!
  • That Guy
(Zune HD is a good PMP but cannot be as good as iPod touch ) . - Gordon47

ill admit, the ipod touch has SOME things above the zune. but simply stating that the zune HD can never be as good as the ipod is very ignorant. My vote is very much on the Microsoft Zune side.
  • Futa_Mill
Zune proprietary Touch not, why well if you have a mac you cant use a Zune not saying I want one but If I did well I couldn't then. Also Itunes far outshines windows media player or whatever the Zune crap uses.
  • Alec
Zune uses "zune software," and it is very good. It has a Zunetag system that tracks your playcount, lets you add buddies, and find others with the same taste. It has band pages, etc. Why do you assume that Itunes is better, when you don't even know what Zune uses? Typical Ipod fan here. Zune software > iTunes.
  • Ipod rebel
Right on. But lets not forget that iTunes is now open to almost any player not just ipod. So ipod no longer has the software advantage it has been running on for so long. For those who are only ipod wise may I recommend anythingbutipod.com A great site that is biased to no player except ipod. More power to the underdogs!
  • For the record, I have both a 120GB Zune and an 30GB iPod I use in my car. I always got a kick out of how the Zune software and WMP do not work together. Windows Media Player will categorize my albums one way and the Zune software the other. Pretty dumb if you ask me.
  • gordon47
Guys , the comparison here is between zune hd and ipod touch 3g NOT apple and microsoft . and lets talk specifications .. Zune HD doesn't have a built-in speaker , and i think thats enough to say that the ipod touch is way way better than zune hd .. beside the ipod touch preforms much better .. take a look at this video and see the difference between zune and ipod touch in browsing WEB http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O6SCjjMmiw
  • Paul
Yeah, the Zune doesn't have a built in speaker, but most devices with built in speakers have pretty crappy quality in any case. Besides, there's nothing more annoying than some guy on the train that plays his lame music out of low quality speakers. How stupid do you have to be to base the quality of a PMP solely on its speaker? I have an old boombox that can pump out some pretty good sound from its speakers, so that must make it better than the Touch. I don't normally get judgemental, but it's people like you that make me believe that Apple really does make products for people that don't have a brain.
  • unbiased77
have u thought that the speakers just might be good for playing games and apps instead of music?
  • shimar kimbal
the video that you are using to compare the two is between the zune hd and the ipod phone. I am neither a fan of either but merely researching the difference of the two, but you cannot compare a phone and a PMP. I would post another link to a video than that one.
  • elissa
shimar , the ipod touch preforms just like the iphone ( even the ipod is better )
  • jackfalk
iphone runs off the sattelite internet shit thingy and there comparing web browsing speeds obviously that is going to be faster than connecting to wifi
  • TMAN
in the video they are comparing an iphone to a zune hd, the iphone runs web browsing off of wirelless connection which is faster than a wifi conection.
  • TMAN
in the video they are comparing an iphone to a zune hd, the iphone runs web browsing off of wirelless connection which is faster than a wifi conection.
  • Alpha Spec
"in the video they are comparing an iphone to a zune hd, the iphone runs web browsing off of wirelless connection which is faster than a wifi conection."

As far as I understand "wireless", and "wifi" in terms of internet connection is the same thing.
  • Music and Media player
what we need to think of is which product is better when there is no wifi around?...what do you do then ipod guys?....who cares about browseing speed....its a music and video player that we want....and who in normal use is going to be sitting in public with their ipod touch up to there ear listening to the monotone sounds coming out of it instead of using ear phones????????
  • Um, no, not in the context of that comment. WiFi is 802.11 like your wifi router at home. The wireless connection this user is referring to is the mobile company's wireless (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3G) connection.
  • JJ
umm, im sorry to interrupt but i had 2 after wat gordon jus said. do u not know that the new 4.3 version update to the zune hd makes the browser waay better and so much faster that it can now beat the speed of the ipod touch safari browser. dont beleive me. I dnt feel like finding the link. but go to youtube and type in zune hd 4.3 ibrowser vs. ipod touch. look who wins the majority of the tests. BUDDY.
  • Tyler
Very true but this video was made by someone who is a fan of the ipod touch 3g... biased information
  • jwong87
you can't compare browsing of an mp3 player to a phone...
  • Benji
Are you aware that the Zune can use the MP4 video format while IPOD can use that as well as AVI format? AVI is a much better format for quality because it is so much larger. So of course quality is better. Convert the video to the HD format (I believe it is AVCHD... not sure) and then lets see the quality comparison. Also I don't want to hear someone else's music.
  • That Guy
so it has an external speaker. so does the Samsung YK series. and that mp3 player isnt really that great. plus the external speaker o nthe ipod touch barely goes to a volume level audible, unless its in a dead quiet room. Microsoft and Apple are two different companies, of course their softwares are different. that's how business works. Don't judge a product when you haven't even given it a chance yet.
  • viktor
    yeeeeahh! zune rulez baby

touch = crap with crappy speakers
zune hd = pretty good pmp

  • JeffMa
I had both a Zune HD and an Apple Ipod. This review is completely misleading. I'm not sure if microsoft had something to do with this Review or not but I ended up selling my Zune HD away. The apple Ipod is much beter in my opinion. Notice the word usage of "claims" throughout the text. "Claims" doesn't necessarily mean "does" or "is". Ya, a Zune can play up to 8.5 hours of video, on an absolute low quality settings. My Ipod lasts longer than the Zune ever wished it did. Ipod is also much more versitile with other programs than the Zune. I can go on and on, but until you own both of them, you can't sit here and criticize either way. I'll just laugh at your false so-called "claims".
  • Jeff are you for real? Do you really think we were were paid or influenced by Microsoft? Have you bothered to read any of the Zune reviews we have done on the site? We gave the original a 5/10 and the Zune HD like a 7 or 8 out of 10.
  • Well, I will claim that yours was a rather pointless comment, but until other people actually read it, they won't be able to determine for themselves.
As far as battery claims, all manufacturers tend to stretch their battery claims as much as they can. There's nothing unusual in that. Thank you for bringing up one entirely unimportant point as to why this article is "completely misleading" you were so helpful to the discussion. I will NOT buy a Zune HD now because you convinced me that they ALL LIE!
  • JeffMa
Just saying, everything is leaning towards the Microsoft side when in reality it really isn't the best thing out there. Wasn't impressed at all. My Zune HD didn't compare to most of those "claims", while at least my Ipod has. So I see them at the same level if not Ipod slightly better. And if people think i'm an Ipod fan boy, they couldn't be more wrong. I had a Zune before I bought the Touch or Zune HD. Never owned an Ipod.
  • mclearu
why are u fighting over which is better when every one in the world has different opinions

Who actualy uses ipod touches built in speaker

    (NO ONE) Enough said
  • reinventnv
well i use mine on occasion .. but your point is understandable
  • Denon
    Apple sucks, Microsoft sucks.

Lets look at both sides of the story first. The Touch has been around alot longer than the HD soo think of it this way, it was way ahead of its time, and not one single portable player out there could touch it, it has since been almost 4 years now. Mac has alot of ideas they can throw into a new touch. On the other hand the HD has been under design for over 2 years now, with one thing in mind, crush the ipod touch. Yes its has OLED , HD output, and more batt life. But think of it this way. Do u think APPLE has just been selling them making rediculous amounts of money without one second thinking about all the new technology they can throw into it? Back to microsoft, With the new atom processor out, who knows WHAT MS will do next, The HD is the first step towards new platforms and new standards for all PMPS out there
  • Kent
I still don't get why Apple always hides or purposely not add features, like bluetooth, which could have been used on the 2nd Gen Touch maybe even on a 1st gen, and they now add the feature, and why can't they add a camera or a mic to the ipod touch? Zune HD has good quality screen, but the app store is amazing as well. This review was a little biased towards Zunes but I think its a tie, App store equals all the qualities of an Zune HD. I also hate those that say "Who has a Zune? It sucks." when they haven't even seen one before.
  • rojohombre
hey kent, the reason they hold off on adding those features when they can, is because they will put them on the next version for you to buy then also. simple logic. your money equals their pockets. get it? of course MS does this also. it's called business. :-) and while the zune is remarkable, apple has of course been working on the "next big thing" for the touch and will introduce it soon (since this version is getting old after all) and it will grab a whole new customer base as well, as old ones (since I see several people here saying they have multiple devices). personally, i can only see having one at a time and will just stick to that thank you. i have to let one break before I can buy another one (I hear my parents' voices saying why are you wasting money???). heheheh...oh wells
  • iLikezunes
I have to admit im an apple fanboy. I had an iPod touch 8 Gig. It was awesome.
Then it got stolen. But you have to admit that the Zune HD is pretty awesome.
    Im getting 1 soon.
  • yo momma
i am either qettinq a zune hd and an ipod touch sometime soon and i just have one thinq 2 say about the zune: unlike the iPod, it comes in different colors and you can put designs on the back which makes it more you and personalized.
  • Mr. Anti-Zune
The iPod touch is much better. First of all, it has the best touchscreen response. And the zune hd doesn't offer many free apps. Instead, microsoft had to be so greedy and only offer 4 apps, which are apps that the ipod touch already comes with. (Calculator, weather, etc) The Zune HD doesn't have built in speakers, and many other feautures the ipod touch has.
  • canurmacplaycrysis
all of zunes apps right now are free >_>
  • rojohombre
this kind of response really gets to me...it's like your saying "my dad can beat up your dad"...so what!! yeah you're right. the zune doesn't have a REALLY crappy built-in speaker on it. SHAME on MS for leaving one out. what are you, like 4 or something? :-)
  • irvn
So here I am, where I was years ago when the 1G ipod nano came out. I resisted ipod until I had to give in as nothing else could compare with the size and ecosystem the apple/nano offered. Now finally there is an alternative. I was considerating a touch but the zune HD is a compelling option.

All this talk of which is better is really just matter of preference or intended use. If you are only interested in pmp, then clearly zune is a better package. If you already spend 10 a month in itunes, then 5 more gets you unlimited access to explore new music without risk, plus you get to keep 10 songs each month (based on the review anyway)
If you want a pocket pc that surfs the web, plays games and apps in addition to playing music then the ipod is a better value. If the zune had bluetooth as the 3G touch now has, my decision would be made. Unwired headphones has been such an important feature for me, I use my nano with a dongle not to have to deal with tangled wires. Either way the existence and success of the zune will only benefit ipod fans, forcing apple to continue it's innovations so everyone wins if zune HD succeeds.
  • rojohombre
WOW...this is so refreshing to see. someone that "gets it". when it comes to comparing the 2, it has nothing to do with performance (cuz they both are kick ass good), it has to do with what you want to do with it. thank you irvn. you've restored my faith...heheheheheh
  • Ale
i dont know which to decide i want to get the i touch but hten again i wanna get the zune hd they both look really cool. i just dont want to regret waisting my money on something crappy
  • Yeagmeister
I am feeling the same as you Ale, I want the best product for the money, but the more i read the more i am torn. I like the zune hd screen , batt life and look. The ipod touch however seems to have the most bang for your buck. Man i am sick of not having the decisive info to move fwd with a purchase.
  • Buy both and return the one you don't like.
  • nick
im sorry but the zune hd is ligit looking
  • dude
its all on ur opinon, but i do agree i dont like fan boys, i really perfer the zune hd over the i touch
  • canurmacplaycrysis
truly fanboys are annoying... i say get the most future proof device (zune) like i bought a 5870 hd radeon for the fact it is future proof i am not a ati person i perfer nvidia but the 295 dosent support x11 sooooo yeah the itouch is a good device all around but man the zune is so much more powerful and much more potential but then again im pretty anti apple ever since i got into pc building i nver liked apple no fun really u buy what you get and u stick with it no fun there wow and cod 4 were a pain to play on a mac as well game porting to a mac is also really bad

is there internet on the Zune Hd, I mean can you get facebook or load a website with the Wi-Fi
  • It has wi-fi and according to http://technologizer.com/2009/09/15/zune-hd-ipo... from last Septemeber, it is supposed to support facebook and twitter "soon."

does the Zune Hd have internet I mean can you get on facebook or a website with the Wi-fi
  • austin98989
yes the Zune HD has internet And HD video
  • SHORTIE
THE IPOD TOUCH AND ZUNE HD BOTH HAVE Calculator, weather, etc APPS

I WENT TO YOUTUBE TO WATCH SOME AMAZING VIDEOS FOR THE HD I WANT ONE CAUSE IT HAS A SCREEN SAVER MORE RADIO STATIONS THE PICS SLIDE AND ROTATES WITH THE ZUNE HD. THE HD HAS INTERNET, SLIDESHOWS, MUSIC,VIDEOS, PICS,APPS, ALREADY INSTALIED FOR U. I LIKE THE MICROST IT COME WITH. I HAVE A 30GB ZUNE I HAVE HAD FOR 3 YEARS NOW. THE HD LOOKS AWESOME. I LOVE THE PRICE. 219.99 I THINK, FOR THE 16GBHD AND THE 32 GB IS CLOSE TO $300.

I LIKE THE HD CAUSE IT HAS DIFFRENT COLORS IT'S COMING IN RED SOON
  • No one is going to take what you say seriously if you have to type in all caps.
  • SHORTIE
I think the zune hd is better. i've never had a ipod, so idk if they both do this or not. but the hd puts yur music and pics in order from date folder and alphabetical order. I'm ocd and if my stuff isn't categorized right i can arrange music and pics.
  • JFrisbee
Everyone says Ipod is better because it has thousands of apps... ok fine yes they do... but how many did they have with the first generation apple Ipod Touch? think about it you look at comparisons between a 3rd generation Ipod Touch and a Zune HD of course the Ipod is going to be better its been around a lot longer... for those that have had an Ipod Touch when they first came out I doubt there was thousands of apps when it first came out... so seriously if you want a true comparison between Ipod and Zune try comparing what Ipod had when it first came out... or its like comparing the first ever car and a new car it doesn't work... of course the new car is going to be nicer
  • rojohombre
I like your analogy here, even though in this case the roles are reversed, as in this case the older is better than the new. nice...
  • mrchop
I got a Zune HD 16gb a while ago and must say I love it. I had an iPod Touch for a while, but became sick of iTunes and their policies. (I actually pay for music and didn't find iTunes fair for purchases.) Once you go Apple, they make it a total b*tch to go back. I'm lucky I got out of using iTunes this early or I would have wasted more the the $80 I did on music that's no-good on any other platform or player. The Zune HD is a VERY solid device to have. The screen is perfect for movies. (yes I watch them on little devices) AudioSurf is the perfect game for a media player and the visuals are impeccable. The music store is great, but is lacking somewhat in artist quantity. Music quality is awesome, but no FLAC or OGG support leaves me a bit disappointed. The internet surfing and application store are a total meh-fest for now, but all I really wanted was music and video at high quality. The battery life makes it a must-have for long rides. I absolutely love the interface after a little while to get used to it. To be honest I can't see myself going back to the apple regime. I don't really want to.
  • ZuneHDrules
I think the zune hd is way better than the ipod touch. Most of the people have a windows computer while virtually about 1% have macs. Microsoft can design better than any company. Apple had to make their products compatible with windows so a lot of people can buy it. True that Apple has 75,000+ apps, but most of them are useless with about 1000 of them the same thing. All of the Zune's apps are actually something that you can use. And there's no 5,000 versions of the same app. Plus the zune has a better screen, better sound quality (with some better headphones than the ones microsoft or apple gives you), a radio, FREE games, and much more. This is microsoft's first generation of a touchscreen PMP and already! it competes with apple's THIRD generation of a PMP. If you would compare microsoft's first gen zune hd with apple's first gen touch, it would be very clear to see which company can make the better PMP.
  • iZune
It's true what you say, but you don't review potential. you compare what the product is now, because you buy the product you don't buy potential.I don't want to be attacked for saying this, but i have heard that the OLED screen doesn't do well in the sun. As for the apps, if 1,000 of the apps are the same, then 74,000 aren't. I think that's a pretty good number. in addition, you say the zune apps are actually something you can use, THOSE APPS ALREADY COME WITH THE iPOD. moving on, i'm not going to enforce my views on anyone, because which PMP you buy depends on the person. I bought my ipod touch for games, not music, but if you want a device for music and looks, get a zune.
  • rojohombre
ok, I WAS going to refrain from veering off topic on this discussion on ZuneHD vs I-Touch, but I cannot stop myself from responding to one of ZuneHDrules statements which is "Microsoft can design better than any company." with all due respect, ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? all I can say is, the latest apple commercials on MS vs Mac (I'm sorry, i can't bring myself to say "PC vs Mac" because they are ALL PCs you dimwitted non-tech USERS. pc stands for personal computer, not a microsoft, or an apple computer. personal) are on the money with the thing about "I'm the safest, and the best MS OS to date! no blue screen here buddy!". yeah right. seriously zunehdrules, think before you make a comment like that. ok, sorry. rant is over. :-)
  • Benji
Microsoft has nowhere near the engineer capability of MAC. If you look at all of the OS's that Microsoft has put out they have been half-done. Windows XP was stable but took 2 service packs. Vista was garbage that they had to quickly put out a new OS in such a short time frame. Windows 98 was pure garbage. Windows 95 was by far their most stable OS. MAC has never had any of those issues except for their first OS. Original Mac users had to type in codes to bring up their programs. PC's had the mouse
  • Zune HD is a lot better than the 1g ipod touch but (and dont get me wrong im going to get a zune hd) the technology of everything has evolved since the 1g ipod touch so microsoft had more to work with. you cant really compare the 2
  • Brandon
This review is a little bit bias.
I mean the Apple's internet WiFi for the touch is a LOT faster than the Zune HD.
However, most of these facts are seemingly true. I am more of an Ipod Person but this review gives me little doubts about the ipod now. =)
  • Erick
Yeah I am an iPod user and it is a great device, but I am too tired of everyone just following the crowd and not giving zune a chance. The Zune HD is a very impressive device and I think it's also good competition for the itouch. It has amazing features and could easily surpass the ipod in a few years if apple doesn't step up their game. What people need to understand is whether you have the itouch or Zune HD your going to have a badass mp3 player. I mean you can't lose either way so what is everyone complaining about?
  • austin98989
Zune hd has a faster internet now if not the same speed at-least with the new 4.3 update. But i still wish it had flash support so i could get on youtube.com to watch videos like the ipod can =(

yeah yeah, but when it comes to media players, it's never 'can i see your new, er, zune?' it will always be 'can i check out your iPod.' and not your computer's songs, but 'let's have a look at your iTunes.' in the same way that you don't ask for a cola drink, you ask for a Coke, Apple own this marketplace and continue to be way way more desirable

everyone else might outdo certain iPods in certain areas, but it's all just playing catch up.

My friend has the Zune HD, which I will buy soon, but I compared the screens, WOW, the OLED screen is really nice and I can tell Microsoft put alot of effort into it. I am VERY Impressed. I currently own the zune 80 GB and I want a nicer display so I will buy the Zune HD. Even though Apple did have the Ipod touch before the Zune HD, I beleive if the Zune HD and the Itouch came out at the same time, Zune HD would win by a mile, I owned Ipods for all my life before My Zune 80, they all broke within a year or so, Apple gets its products from cheap Chinese garbage that is WAAAAAAY overpriced.
  • Rick
The back of my ZuneHD says, "Assembled in china." Haha.
  • Mr SIre
I don’t know why no one has addressed the biggest debate. As mp3 player they both suck! You have to restart your library all over with both of them. If your using a standard mp3 player that cost $20 you can get rhapsody for $15 a month and have unlimited music available at your disposal and share with other mp3. With ipod crap you have to buy all the music. Zune, you can buy music but you can only share (with the very small amount of other owners) songs for 3 times then the other guy has to buy it. There both a rip off if you’re looking at the actual usage of an mp3 player. For $300+ I should have any headaches. I want music when I want it. Download when I want it and keep what I want without paying an arm and a leg. So I guess unless I want a bunch of other bells and whistles I can try and figure out between the 2, but if I just want music, I can spend $20 and have more options available than a $300 toy box. These two monster companies and this is the best either can do???... What a shame.

The matter of the fact is; the iPhone/Touch are pop culture phenomenons. No company ever expected the response from a complete touch device and now everyone IS copying them to get market share. Secondly, the Zune HD is alot better than the iPod touch but let's be honest. The apps (applications -_-) are the prime reason people love this device, and by Microsoft not putting emphasis on this is not a good idea at all. But like i said before, the iPod touch came first, and there can be something better than it, but it will never have the same impact the iPod touch had ... I'm just saying lol
  • Scott
Zune is way better, Who cares about that app garbage. OoooOoOoOoO look im drinking beer!! The Zune sounds better and the ipod is for followers. And as far as the software goes who cares about Apple has more songs on their database there are things out there called torrents. I use torrents all the time and have 5,000 songs on my Zune and havent paid for any of that 1 dollar a song.
  • hello

  • Wally Bag o' Donuts
Ipod Touch= The ultimate Pocket PC with the Apps and AdvancedWeb Browser
Zune HD= The Ultimate Music, video and gaming device.
It comes down to what you are looking for in a handheld device. I want a device that plays my music, vids and games. Sure the Touch can do all that but the Zune HD has a step up with the OLED screen, which is amazing, and a more responsive Accelerometer, as shown with Audiosurf.
  • Adam Williams
This review seemed very biased in my opinion. Did a Microsoft official write this? Especially as far as the Software went. Zune only offers there software for Windows PC while iTunes is available on Macs and PC. That is a key point that you failed to make and should have easily gave Apple the upper hand. I was also disappointed that you didn't compare them as far as how easy each one is to use. I think you need to do some more hand-on-hand research on stay away from what you read on the internet. 2/5 stars.
  • Dude, are you serious? Have you even used both of them, or did you just buy the iPod and that's why you are backing it? Why does the Zune have to support the Mac? Ever stop to think that maybe Apple doesn't want to support the Zune and that's why it doesn't work on the Mac? Most people still do not use a Mac, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Personally, I am glad to see an in-depth comparison of the two.
  • Karan
The reason that there is no Zune software for the Mac is because Macs hold only 3% of the market share- an insignificant amount. The amount you have to pay to the workers to recode a whole media player and import it to the mac will probably be higher than the profit microsoft will get from putting the Zune software on a mac!

Apple, on the other hand, put iTunes on windows because Windows has a 96% market share on computers, so obviously, that and the fact that the iPod is pretty successful, they will reap benifits from putting it on Windows.

Microsoft probably knows too that people who have Macs are probably hardcore Apple people who hate anything with the word 'Microsoft' in it, even if they haven't used it.

Give the Zune time and it'll mature. It's only been out for 3 months for heaven's sake! Obviously there won't be many apps and there will be some teething problems.
  • Jon
This is to LOL! Just so you know if you go back and actually read what they wrote they said that apple won for apps! And I totally disagree with you, being lighter is better because say you are running, you don't want something that heavy bouncing around in your pocket!!!

I would like to ask a hypotical question. If I am a writer and I want to find a device that I can use for writing, would the ipod touch be better or would the zune?
  • For writing? I wouldn't use either. What exactly do you mean by writing?
  • Hello
Well, I hoped to use it to type in my essays.
  • I hate Apple & Microsoft
Dude, you'd be better off with a $300 Netbook.
  • Tom
Finally a genuine review. Yeah, Microsoft knows how to come up with a good product. Sound quality is superior compared to Apple even to Creative. Design? That what you call slick, ellegant. And apps? who bloody cares about them its fun for 5 mins. Anyway this little thing is more powerfull than any device on the market right now. Yeah i mean decoding HD files and games.NVIDIA rulez. So get it while you can. Yeah and Zune Soft is just pleasure to use. Nick CONGRATS for good review.
  • Do apps matter? It just depends who you are. If you are an audiophile, not so much. But I love the touch when you are in places that you need to kill time. Playing something like Bejeweled, or chatting over IM is great.
  • Hello
For me, apps can matter. I am not a person who listens to music or watch too many videos. I am some kind of blogger and I need to type out my posts on the go. The ipod touch has aided me in that aspect, there is a free app on app store that allows you to edit word documents, and there is also an app that is a dictionary and thesaurus, I think the keyboard is big and easy to type on. There is also stanza, that app lets you download free e-books(some of them are free, not all). And the games are also good. I only downloaded the free stuff though.

I own a 32 gb Ipod Touch 3G and I absollutely love it.
I would like to point out that unlike and Iphone, Ipod touch does not have a build-in GPS as the author mentioned in the 'App Support' category above.
  • Jon
trying to decide which one you are going to get really depends on who you are, what you want, and what you believe, I want apps, but im willing to buy a Zune, because to me its a good mp3 player, and how many people at your high school have an ipod touch? way too many i want to be different and not just the same, and so im going to buy a Zune HD. Many of you will way oh but Ipod i better, maybe but not for me, for me Zune is better and that is pure fact
  • zuneftw
Ok guys, im just saying I had an I-Pod nano 1st gen 16GB and it broke in six months and this is is when it was first released it cost me $280.00 + about $1000 worth of songs.

We now have the same thing but it is a Zune it cost 3/4 of the price and it has lasted 2 years and is still going strong. I am now giving this to my mother of an exchange a Zune HD.

I am very very happy and I believethis is a great brand.
  • you don't need to know my name
the apps are completely dominated by apple... but zune has better quality apps... like the app, Audiosurf Tilt... it's got really good graphics... i think zune is better than an iPod Touch tho.. especially when we come to the quality...
  • jslizzy413
Zune is more focused on being an Mp3 player and iPod touch is more on the App and Internet browsing side. Get over it you bunch of whiny people, Yea people like Apple so what? Stop crying about How iPod does this and How iPod does that. Honestly I say Who cares?
  • reinventnv
ok .... you know what screw apple and microsoft... i wanna see google poke its head in this one with something amazing

The Zune HD is definately a better choice. I own one and my friend has an Ipod touch. He even agrees its faster, better resolution, lighter, better features, and the songs are cheaper. In my opinion it does better the the Ipodtouch on theyre first try vs. the Ipods 4th. Most of the Apps on the Ipod are a waste of time and energy. Instead of paying money for a white screen to use as a flashlight, i think ill buy a real one.

Everyone keeps bringing up the fact that iPod users are mainstream and that everyone who posts a pro iPod comment is simply just following the crowd. Well those post in themselves show that Zune users are pro Zune because they are the underdog. There is a reason this forum is Zune Vs iPod and not ZUNE vs Sony Walkman or Samsung mp3 player VS iPod. That's because they are the two best out there.
  • Sam
The thing with iPod, is that everyone makes a big deal out of it. We all have to admit it's good, but it's not THAT good. People always jailbreak their iPods so they can get free apps and backgrounds, then they break their iPod, take it back to the store, but because they've fucked it up, it's literally worth nothing, so no iPod for them. Sure, it has 90,000 apps, 10,000 times more than the Zune, but who the hell cares? There are only 1000 of those apps that are actually worth it! Zune is a breath of fresh air. The only reason Microsoft hasn't advertised, and started shipping over the atlantic, and the reason in england, if you ask someone if they have a Zune they'll go "A what? A Zoom?" is because they're not stupid. Plus, they're a little scared and cautious. Give it a couple of years, Zune is in 1G, Ipod is in 3GS, but the Zune has already beat it, minus the app lack. In a few years, when a thirteen year old english kid can afford a Zune HD, it'll be better. Besides, Microsoft has the advantage. They have the Xbox 360. And Windows. Put them together in the shape of the Zune, and the iPod won't know what hit it.

    iPod Touch:
    - Huge selection of applications
    - Built in speaker
    - Larger screen
    - Focus is more on gaming and wireless internet

    Zune HD:
    - OLED screen
    - HD radio receiver
    - Lighter (Zune 2.6 ounces, Touch 4.05 ounces)
    - Focus is more on audio and video content

Both devices have unique features that the other lacks. Preference depends on the person.

the zune hd has only been out since september, the ipod touch has years lead to the zune and it takes months to create apps which the ipod is ahead on but they have some lame and random apps i have both the touch and hd and i think the hd is better its smaller thinner and looks better not to mention its 98% scratch proof the back of the ipod touch gets scratched up to easy give the zune some time to prove its worth
  • Jon
Before all of you get back to debating arguing and bickering, in history competition has brought so many advances in our life, such as the Human Genome Project, and Countless others, Apple is going to see the success from the Microsoft Zune and improve what apple feels need improving, then Microsoft is going to improve this will happen again and again its life, its competition basically its the quest for power, but mostly money... So think about it is the battle between Apple and Microsoft good or bad, I know it is good creative minds find millions of ways to out compete their competitors, and what do we get a good product, and they get money to continue improving and competing between each other
