Microsoft Zune HD vs. Apple iPod Touch

iPod Touch vs. Zune HD

We pit both corporate offspring against each other to see which reigns supreme when the cards fall.

Microsoft has made no attempt to hide which trendy little MP3 player lay in the sights of the recently released Zune HD: Apple’s iPod Touch. Apple turned the market upside down when it released the Touch back in 2007, and while Microsoft let its own Zune line languish for two years before responding, the silver bullet Microsoft has finally offered up has clearly been engineered to drop Apple. But will it succeed? With both players in hand, we ran down the key advantages of each to determine which truly makes the ultimate portable video device.

Price

Microsoft may have had Apple firmly trounced in the price department when it lifted the lid on the ZuneHD pricing back in August, but since Apple responded with a price drop on the Touch in September, the gap has narrowed significantly. Apple technically holds the lowest entry-level price with the 8GB iPod Touch, marked at $199, but only because Microsoft’s cheapest Zune sports 16GB of memory, and sells for $220. (Apple no longer offers a model in that size capacity, but you can still snag a 16GB iPod Touch through Amazon for $248).

Apple iPod Touch vs. Microsoft Zune HD

The two players only match up head-to-head in the 32GB size, where Apple’s iPod sells for $299 and the ZuneHD sells for $290, and almost-negligible price difference for most folks debating between the two. Apple’s top-shelf 64GB player sells for $399, but Microsoft offers no comparable ZuneHD in that capacity. Although Apple has the cheapest entry-level model, we have to hand the price war victory to Microsoft, which has managed to skim just enough off the price to make non-Apple-devotees look twice before leaping.

Winner: Microsoft

Display

The generous 3.5-inch screen on Apple’s iPod Touch has long made it the de facto player of choice for on-the-go video, but Microsoft set out to challenge that lead with the ZuneHD. Not by offering a bigger screen, but a better one. Although the ZuneHD screen measures a slightly smaller 3.3 inches diagonally, it’s uses cutting edge OLED technology, which delivers brightness and contrast unlike anything you can find in a LCD. It’s the same technology that sizzled before our eyes on the Samsung Impression and it looks even more impressive here, where Microsoft has crammed more pixels (480 by 272) into a similar space for a crisper look. You’ll really only need to watch Microsoft’s demo video to realize that this is no gimmick – it absolutely shimmers with color. If this thing were a miniature TV, it would be the Pioneer Elite Kuro Pro 111FD.

Apple iPod Touch vs. Microsoft Zune HD

Will you notice the lack of 0.2 inches diagonally? Absolutely. And technically, Apple has more pixels (480 x 320), too. But we think the brilliance of an OLED display more than makes up for it.

Winner: Microsoft

Battery Life

No matter how small or how capable, a personal media player does no good if you’re constantly running back to the wall to charge it, making battery life one of the most important specs that you’ll never truly appreciate until you take a device into the field. In this department, Apple didn’t have it half bad to begin with, boasting 30 hours of music playback and six hours of video playback for the iPod Touch. That’s a very respectable three movies, provided you use modest settings. But Microsoft has one upped Apple here as well, claiming the Zune HD will deliver 33 hours of music and 8.5 hours of video. However slight another three hours of music may look, the extra 2.5 hours of video stands out to us as a significant advantage – and it makes sense, given that OLED displays are more efficient than their LCD counterparts. Even if you don’t want to watch Titanic back to back, the extended battery life should allow you to pump up brightness past the most miserly settings to a more pleasant level.

Apple iPod Touch vs. Microsoft Zune HD

Although most PMP owners we know tend to leave their players overnight for a little R&R when it’s charging time, Microsoft claims the Zune HD will fill up faster, too: two hours when fast charging from a wall adapter, three when suckling from a computer’s USB port. Apple claims the iPod Touch can fast charge to 80 percent capacity in two hours, but requires four for a full charge.

Winner: Microsoft

Actually the Zune HD's kit you're talking about is $39.99 so yeah... way cheaper.
  • gordon47
Stupid review , apple is always better.
  • metalhead25
Why? Just because everyone has an ipod and you want to conform to popular culture? I'm sick and tired of people talking about how ipod is better than zune. Why? because it has all those apps. Come on. Half of those apps have no use what so ever. An app where you can pretend to shoot a gun, or where you can pretend to drink alcohol. What kind of moron would pay for something like that. I just wish everyone would stop putting these stupid comments saying things like "apple is always better than zune," and not even giving a good reason to support their ideas.
  • AppleFails
I agree 100%. Unfortunately, Apple's products are retard-friendly, hence, since most of the population is retarded, you get the majority being Apple fans. As an example of what I'm talking about, look at how long it took for them to add copy/paste to the iPhone. It's pathetic when you realize that almost every other smart phone had this ability at launch. Apple is nothing special; it's time for people to realize this company is garbage and stop buying their products.
  • henry.
you are the man. good name too.
  • AppleFails
Funny how Apple couldn't even get there act together to give the 3rd gen a camera. Yeah, clearly Apple is always better. I'm so sick of Apple fanboys who can't see past their own nose, much less see how Apple really has nothing to offer. 75,000+ apps? Most of these are garbage, and this is coming from someone who looked for apps that they would buy if they got an iPod Touch. Needless to say, the ZuneHD is a far superior PMP.
  • AppleFailsHard!
Ya I'm tired of those fan-boys too, them with their i-pods saying they are awesome and they are the best and talking about the "Apps"(why do you even call it that, i know it means applications but WHY?)while Zune has Audio surf ! ! ! ! ! AUDIOSURF!!!!!!!!
  • megatallica123
i have to go wit metalhead hes right lets not follow the crowd
  • Uori
"i'm going to follow the crowd by not following the crowd"
  • gordon47
Come on !! What is the big deal with zune hd ?? HD radio My butt... and apple is better when it comes to sound quality and music in general... And for App store... how can u say it has useless apps?? The truth to be told there is some stupid apps... but in general the app store has more than 75,000 app and a lot of them are very useful... (Zune HD is a good PMP but cannot be as good as iPod touch ) .
  • metalhead25
Look. I'm not saying that ipod is a terrible PMP, but I am tired of people saying that there is no comparison between the ipod touch and thezune HD just because of the apps. Sometimes ipod fans can be just as annoying as Twilight fans (and thats saying allot). If you look at it from a music and video standpoint, zune HD probably is better. Between the zune pass, HD radio, an OLED screen, and 720p tv output, zune really doesn't leave ipod with much to brag about. The touch is more like a hand-held computer than a PMP. As far as sound quality, I really don't see a difference. If you can please help me see (or hear) a difference. Because I sure as hell can't hear it.
  • listenup
ha ha dude the zune hd is way way way better then the ipod touch. ipod touch is kinda old now anyways the zune hd looks and preforms way better. i got my zune and all my friends with the ipod touch admit the zune is way way way better. dont hate!!!
  • That Guy
(Zune HD is a good PMP but cannot be as good as iPod touch ) . - Gordon47

ill admit, the ipod touch has SOME things above the zune. but simply stating that the zune HD can never be as good as the ipod is very ignorant. My vote is very much on the Microsoft Zune side.
  • Futa_Mill
Zune proprietary Touch not, why well if you have a mac you cant use a Zune not saying I want one but If I did well I couldn't then. Also Itunes far outshines windows media player or whatever the Zune crap uses.
  • Alec
Zune uses "zune software," and it is very good. It has a Zunetag system that tracks your playcount, lets you add buddies, and find others with the same taste. It has band pages, etc. Why do you assume that Itunes is better, when you don't even know what Zune uses? Typical Ipod fan here. Zune software > iTunes.
  • Ipod rebel
Right on. But lets not forget that iTunes is now open to almost any player not just ipod. So ipod no longer has the software advantage it has been running on for so long. For those who are only ipod wise may I recommend anythingbutipod.com A great site that is biased to no player except ipod. More power to the underdogs!
  • For the record, I have both a 120GB Zune and an 30GB iPod I use in my car. I always got a kick out of how the Zune software and WMP do not work together. Windows Media Player will categorize my albums one way and the Zune software the other. Pretty dumb if you ask me.
  • gordon47
Guys , the comparison here is between zune hd and ipod touch 3g NOT apple and microsoft . and lets talk specifications .. Zune HD doesn't have a built-in speaker , and i think thats enough to say that the ipod touch is way way better than zune hd .. beside the ipod touch preforms much better .. take a look at this video and see the difference between zune and ipod touch in browsing WEB http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O6SCjjMmiw
  • Paul
Yeah, the Zune doesn't have a built in speaker, but most devices with built in speakers have pretty crappy quality in any case. Besides, there's nothing more annoying than some prick on the train that plays his shitty music out of low quality speakers. How stupid do you have to be to base the quality of a PMP solely on its speaker? Shit! I have an old boombox that can pump out some pretty good sound from its speakers, so that must make it better than the Touch. Dumbass. I don't normally get judgemental, but it's people like you that make me believe that Apple really does make products for morons that don't have a brain.
  • shimar kimbal
the video that you are using to compare the two is between the zune hd and the ipod phone. I am neither a fan of either but merely researching the difference of the two, but you cannot compare a phone and a PMP. I would post another link to a video than that one.
  • elissa
shimar , the ipod touch preforms just like the iphone ( even the ipod is better )
  • That Guy
so it has an external speaker. so does the Samsung YK series. and that mp3 player isnt really that great. plus the external speaker o nthe ipod touch barely goes to a volume level audible, unless its in a dead quiet room. Microsoft and Apple are two different companies, of course their softwares are different. that's how business works. Don't judge a product when you haven't even given it a chance yet.
  • viktor
    yeeeeahh! zune rulez baby
  • stompy1769
touch = crap with crappy speakers
zune hd = pretty good pmp
gordan 47 = fanboy who has no idea what hes talking about
  • JeffMa
I had both a Zune HD and an Apple Ipod. This review is completely misleading. I'm not sure if microsoft had something to do with this Review or not but I ended up selling my Zune HD away. The apple Ipod is much beter in my opinion. Notice the word usage of "claims" throughout the text. "Claims" doesn't necessarily mean "does" or "is". Ya, a Zune can play up to 8.5 hours of video, on an absolute low quality settings. My Ipod lasts longer than the Zune ever wished it did. Ipod is also much more versitile with other programs than the Zune. I can go on and on, but until you own both of them, you can't sit here and criticize either way. I'll just laugh at your false so-called "claims".
  • Jeff are you for real? Do you really think we were were paid or influenced by Microsoft? Have you bothered to read any of the Zune reviews we have done on the site? We gave the original a 5/10 and the Zune HD like a 7 or 8 out of 10.
  • JeffMa
Just saying, everything is leaning towards the Microsoft side when in reality it really isn't the best thing out there. Wasn't impressed at all. My Zune HD didn't compare to most of those "claims", while at least my Ipod has. So I see them at the same level if not Ipod slightly better. And if people think i'm an Ipod fan boy, they couldn't be more wrong. I had a Zune before I bought the Touch or Zune HD. Never owned an Ipod.
  • mclearu
why are u fighting over which is better when every one in the world has different opinions
  • austin98989
Who actualy uses ipod touches built in speaker

    (NO ONE) Enough said
  • Denon
    Apple sucks, Microsoft sucks.

Lets look at both sides of the story first. The Touch has been around alot longer than the HD soo think of it this way, it was way ahead of its time, and not one single portable player out there could touch it, it has since been almost 4 years now. Mac has alot of ideas they can throw into a new touch. On the other hand the HD has been under design for over 2 years now, with one thing in mind, crush the ipod touch. Yes its has OLED , HD output, and more batt life. But think of it this way. Do u think APPLE has just been selling them making rediculous amounts of money without one second thinking about all the new technology they can throw into it? Back to microsoft, With the new atom processor out, who knows WHAT MS will do next, The HD is the first step towards new platforms and new standards for all PMPS out there
  • Kent
I still don't get why Apple always hides or purposely not add features, like bluetooth, which could have been used on the 2nd Gen Touch maybe even on a 1st gen, and they now add the feature, and why can't they add a camera or a mic to the ipod touch? Zune HD has good quality screen, but the app store is amazing as well. This review was a little biased towards Zunes but I think its a tie, App store equals all the qualities of an Zune HD. I also hate those that say "Who has a Zune? It sucks." when they haven't even seen one before.
  • iLikezunes
I have to admit im an apple fanboy. I had an iPod touch 8 Gig. It was awesome.
Then it got stolen. But you have to admit that the Zune HD is pretty awesome.
    Im getting 1 soon.
  • yo momma
i am either qettinq a zune hd and an ipod touch sometime soon and i just have one thinq 2 say about the zune: unlike the iPod, it comes in different colors and you can put designs on the back which makes it more you and personalized.
  • Mr. Anti-Zune
The iPod touch is much better. First of all, it has the best touchscreen response. And the zune hd doesn't offer many free apps. Instead, microsoft had to be so greedy and only offer 4 apps, which are apps that the ipod touch already comes with. (Calculator, weather, etc) The Zune HD doesn't have built in speakers, and many other feautures the ipod touch has.
  • irvn
So here I am, where I was years ago when the 1G ipod nano came out. I resisted ipod until I had to give in as nothing else could compare with the size and ecosystem the apple/nano offered. Now finally there is an alternative. I was considerating a touch but the zune HD is a compelling option.

All this talk of which is better is really just matter of preference or intended use. If you are only interested in pmp, then clearly zune is a better package. If you already spend 10 a month in itunes, then 5 more gets you unlimited access to explore new music without risk, plus you get to keep 10 songs each month (based on the review anyway)
If you want a pocket pc that surfs the web, plays games and apps in addition to playing music then the ipod is a better value. If the zune had bluetooth as the 3G touch now has, my decision would be made. Unwired headphones has been such an important feature for me, I use my nano with a dongle not to have to deal with tangled wires. Either way the existence and success of the zune will only benefit ipod fans, forcing apple to continue it's innovations so everyone wins if zune HD succeeds.
