Hands on with the Sony Xperia U at MWC 2012: Sony’s solo stab at a smartphone

With Sony’s long-time Ericsson partnership finally dead and the Sony name alone stamped on all its future handsets, the consumer electronics giant is doing its best to get back in the game and claw its way out from underneath companies like Samsung. At MWC 2012, that has meant the launch of both the Xperia P and Xperia U to join the existing Xperia S in the “NXT” line of phones. All three share a band of light-up clear plastic, but the Xperia U is the smallest of the bunch at just 3.5 inches. While it’s a novel touch and distinctly Sony, the company may have to concentrate on more than aesthetics to bring its new line up to par with heavyweight competitors.
