I have bought Maxtor One Touch 500G Ext HDD just a few days ago.Only it worked one time!

When I put my valuable data into the External HDD, I could not access to my data again,the shop says we can't do anything for your data but only we can change the HDD with a new one.

So I recommend if you want to buy such a garbage from Maxtor,back up your data also in another place.

My new 750GB Maxtor One Touch died after 3mos of very light use — first a grinding noise when I turned it on. I was stupid and turned it off — bad luck, it would not boot up again.

I’ve had great luck with earlier (and smaller) Maxtor drivers, but the 750GB has no reliability.

I got one and after 10 months its starts to grind once switched on. The grinding would disappear, but what does that mean? Something is on the way out. I’d avoid the Maxtor products unless you’ve got no choice.

I experienced early failure with my very first Maxtor One Touch III, and had it replaced by the retailer. Over a short period I accumulated a total of 5 One Touch III’s, and 3 of those 5 have already failed…4 out of 6 including the first one. (“…fool me twice, shame on me!”) I started using Seagate Free Agents after that and have yet to experience a failure. Go figure. Can I expect any resolution from Maxtor/Seagate for the bad One Touch III’s?

Where were these reviews when I went to buy this hard drive?? I had mine for only 7 months and it failed – click click, click click…. $1700 later and I have most of my files back, but Maxtor won’t honor it’s warrantee because I had it worked on by a professional lab, (other than Maxtor). AAARRRRGGGG!!!!

By the way, the actual hard drive inside was a Seagate with a Maxtor case. I will never buy another Maxtor or Seagate!

Completely agree with all the comments before me. I’ve had my Maxtor One Touch 4 hard drive for about 5 months and today, out of the blue, it has failed to power up. I’ve just wasted a good few hours trying to get it to work, but to no avail. Given the stories about the amount that they’re charging to get your files back, I’m not even going to bother with the warranty. Fortunately I have my important files backed up with a reliable piece of hardware! I don’t want another free one if there are so many people complaining about them being defective.

I wouldn’t recommed this product.

My Maxtor died after 2 and a half months of usage. It no longer powers up. Maxtor is a piece of crap…I wouldn’t refer that hard drive to anybody.

I had my external hard drive for 12 months and now my computer or no computer recognizes it. It is a piece of crap you pay a good amount of money to have your data personal pictures taken care of and it’s just no good. Data recovery wants to charge me $1200.00 to recover data isn’t that so messed up this people know that their equipment comes defective and their still selling their item I will tell everyone I know too that the brand is no good, I will never purchase another again.

I had my hard drive for about 18 months and it is no longer recognized by either of my computers. They will replace it for free because it is defective, but want $1900 to give me back the data that is on it!! They admit their product is defective but I have to pay them for my data? Are they nuts? I will NEVER purchase another one of their products again and I will tell everyone I know about the scam they are running!!

I bought this product and it has crashed 2 computers. Every computer I plug it into begins to run very slowly and then it crashes. I finally narrowed it down to this drive due to the fact that I installed the disk and began having problems with it right away. It is a bad product.

Failure with no warning seems to be spinning fine but no longer recognized by either my PC or Mac. I bought this unit 19 months ago.

Called Maxtor and some woman in India informed me Maxtor will not restore the 200 GB of audio files under warranty, only replace the drive. Restoration was quoted at $1400 US.

I am about to remove from enclosure (voiding warranty) so I can put into an internal slot on my PC get the data, and then NEVER buying Seagate or Maxtor again.

I used the unit for about 2 years but then it became undetectable by all computers. Warranty was past one year, but Maxtor offered to recover my data for $700! After much trouble shooting, the HD is working fine as an internal drive in my computer. The IC/chipset in the case must have gone bad-no recognition of the USB or fire-wire connections. Maxtor was of no help and offered nothing. Read many strings about others who have had drive failures, placed another non-Maxtor HD in the case, and the onboard chips flash the HD into only recognizing a 128G HD, even if it is much higher. Quite a process for people to undue this Maxtor Sabotage. I will not buy any more Maxtor products. Maybe Seagate buying Maxtor can improve quality and service, but for now- See you later Maxtor.

No protective circuitry, no fuses etc. Any kind of power issue and your data is simply gone. A 12 cent fuse would do wonders to protect the logic board on the ATA drive inside of this thing.

Purchased this a year ago for redundant external storage. Today it started making a clicking sound and is inaccessible. I’ve just read HUNDREDS of user reviews expressing grief and horror over losing everything.

I want to emphasize, before anything else, that my drive is working fine, for now at least.

The drive is making this very noisy whining noise which I suspect is coming from the fan. The drive is working fine, and datas inside the drive is not affected at the present time. This is the second time a Maxtor drive I owned have this kind of problem. This will be the last time I will buy a Maxtor drive. They will have to get my money from my cold, dead fingers from now on.

Have had Maxtor One Touch for 2 years now and it continues to stop working – without notice. Very hard to work with and understand and VERY frustrating to have to keep reformatting it. This isn’t supposed to be what a backup drive does – it is not reliable. Won’t buy it again, ever!

Well, I had my drive for about 5 months, and now, it just clicks and does nothing. I want to blow this thing to hell. I just need a shotgun. This PIECE OF S$$# is not worth the gunpowder it would take to blow it back into hell where it came from, and Maxtor/Seagate SUCKS. I wont buy another drive from either ever again. EVER.

If the external drive is making a clicking noise or is inacessable then the enclosure circuit is probably dead. This happened to me. To retrieve the data I just removed the drive from the enclosure and installed it to my pc.

Just unscrew the enclosure to remove the drive, order up a new enclosure, and install the drive to it.

I bought the Maxtor OneTouch III to backup my home files. Worked for 6 months before clicking noise showed up. Windows doesn’t recognize it and can’t access any files on it. Have spent last 60 minutes on hold. Have requested replacement drive but will never buy another Seagate (60 minutes on hold is incredibly ANNOYING) or Maxtor (product failure after 6 months?) product again.

I bought the Maxtor 500GB to store my work files – It worked for four months. Then access was off and on – hte powere light switch was flashing yellow – accoeding to the manual – it was a power chod issue – the next day the clicking started and then nothing – no access – no recognition of the drive. Took it Back to Best Buy – they couldn’t do anything and shipped it to Seagate. They called back and said that I had dropped the hard drive – ridiculous!!

The instruction book is difficult to understand with no definition of terminology such as new script, run script, open script; likewise, what is the difference between restore and duplicate? After a system failure, I found technical support people nearly as unfamiliar with the product as myself. Even though I have an engineering degree and have worked with computers for decades, I found the Maxtor One-Touch frustrating to use and unreliable.

Just bought it, installed, and set up backup feature. 2 days later screwed around and deleted an entire year of pictures and used the Restore feature the get them back. THANK GOODNESS for the Maxtor drive. It worked like a champ. Maybe it won’t last – but it’s already paid for itself.

I planned to purchase second 300GB drive, since my Maxtor 300 started to give clicking sounds. After checking all the feedback I will never purchase Maxtor products. Looks like I have been very lucky (one year OK), just after warranty. I have used chkdsk/f to fix several errors, always turned on disk after windows was running and turned off after windows was down. I have been runing disk quite a lot average 200hours/week.
