I have tried a few of this type of headphone, one from Sony & anouther from Koss. The Sony’s were way overbright & not very efficient & the Koss was overblown on the bass if you could get a good seal, if not then they were too bright. They were also very inconsistant out of the box so to speak & could not get a good seal with the stock ear plugs that came with the Koss’s.
The Shure Canal phone are in a whole different class than the others mentioned & it is clear that they did thier homework as these phones perform above most expectations. No single part of the sound spectrum stands out thought the treble does seem a little soft but not missing in action I’m just used to a more lively presentation in the treble, on the otherhand it is this property that makes them easy on the ears soundwise. Don’t take that to mean that they are lacking in detail as it very abundant & we all been listening to headphone & speakers with emphasis in the treble too long & came to expect it even though its not in most live acoustic music. these phones let you know that more is not always better as these are about as natural in balance as they come.
The only nit that I have is that I wish the reusable were a little thinner as that would be more confortable to my ears as I get an earache sometimes in my right earafter a while of listening. Thinner ones would solve this as the sony’s don’t cause this pain ( they are much thinner & still seal well but these Shures are definately far surperior in every other respect.
I especially like the way they stay in your ears with the wire wrapped around behind the ear even a firm tug on the wire does not even budge them from your ears, it feels like they could remove your ears before the come unseated!!!!!
Make no mistake these are quality earphones that rival the best full size phones no matter the cost & I’ve heard many expensive ones that I found to be worthy paperweight as that is what they were realy worth compared to these. It was hard for me to imagine that something so small could sound so right when many haven’t got the full size ones right yet . By the way someone compared these to bottom of the line Grados, they should have looked a lot higher up the Grado line as I never liked that model Grado ( they sound muddled due to reflections off the cheap plastic back, you have to go up to the ones that have wire back to rid this problem in the Grado’s). These Shure phones never sound muddled at all.
Very Highly recomended

Getting the seal between the earphone and ear canal is the key to the sound. I was surprised to find that the largest rubber sleeves fit my ears best. The Shure website has a tutorial on fitting the earphones. They also sell the ear pads for reasonable prices. I didn’t like them at all for about 1/2 and hour, then I wondered how I lived without them and now wanting to get the $400 model. The pressure in the ear takes getting used to and they sound better and better as they ‘break in’. You will immediately notice details in your music that you didn’t ever notice before, even with other quality headphones… like the sound of the pick on strings and the vibration on the drum head after it’s struck. They will also expose flaws in your mediocre or old recordings… Wow.

I am not going to bother boring you with how clear they are and how you can hear the high mid and bass and how you can hear new sound that you cant hear on inferior ear phones because this is all ture.
But must say these are very good, I commute on a motorbike and I have used them for blasting up and down the motorway at 100+mph and you can still hear your music clearly so I dont deny that they work, but and this is the only real problem I have found is fitting them into your ears it is a real knack to it you cant just ‘whack’ them in you must follow the instructions exactly and yes you have to run the cable down the back of your neck. Oh and to all of the people with sony headphones no these dont stop working in one ear for no apprent reason after 12months!

Theese headphones ar pretty good, but they cant hang with the $40 sony minidrivers. the shures best feature are the mids, which i turn down anyways. the freq response is not that good, makes the music sound flat. check out the sonys

I just switched over from the sonys, and there is no comparison at all in sound quality. I use them with an iPod and the sonys were overtaxed pretty frequently (giving a good bit of distortion). These are handling everything I throw at them with no problems.
The only thing that I don’t like is trying to fit the darn things into my ears and getting a good seal. I used the mid-size mold with the sonys, but stepped up to the large soft ones for this pair. The harder clear silicon ones offered absolutely no seal, and the foam ones are a little cumbersome to deal with. I guess that it is good that they give you so many different options when you buy them.
Overall, I love them – I’ll put up with some extra adjustments for this quality of sound.

I had the sony’s that the previous reviewer is talking about, and I actually took them back to get these. A friend of mine had the shure’s and I had to have them. They are absolutly amazing. Best headphones I’ve had/

Take the time to find the right seal with these headphones, and you will be rewarded with great detail and impressive frequency response. Midrange and treble are great, and the bass is surprisingly good enough to keep me happy. These things truly isolate you from any sound going on in the outside world, and have even made trips to the crowded grocery store bearable. I only wish I were irresponsible enough to wear them on the drive to work and back.

I bought these ‘phones at the airport. I also had the sony’s mentioned below, but the cable was starting to degrade. It didn’t affect sound quality, but made them slight uncomfortable on the back of my neck. When I first connected the headphones to my iPod mini, after putting the bits together on a turbulent plane! (wax guard and seals), I put them in and they do feel strange for a while. I’m on the smallest rubber sleeves (as I was on the sony’s). I wasn’t blown away at the start but on further listening was really impressed (I think that being on the plane didn’t help the finesse of the ‘phones, they certainly cut out most of the sound of crying babies though). The sony’s are good phones but don’t have the openess of the shure’s. The expansive sound stage and subtlety of the recordings really come through. When I got to use the the headphones in a quieter environment I tried James Blunt and Vanessa Carlton, I felt like I was in the recording studio. Great placing of instuments, vocals locked in and crystal clear. Daft Punk – Around The World, rocked my world big fat bass throbing, filling my head. With these ‘phones I can’t help but toe tap (much to the amusement of my wife).
I’m looking forward to ripping the rest of my music collection and checking out different bitrates (192 and rising!!).
Using the shures is like turning off Dolby noise reduction on a tape, the sound stage pops.

I’ve owned several pairs of ear buds in the last year trying to find a set that I could use every day. The shure e2c’s are those buds, great sound quality a super tight seal that completly isolates you from the outside world and a comforable design that stays were its supposed to in you ear. The quality of these ear buds are exceptional without stepping up into the 300-400$ range. I would highly recommend the shure e2c to any body wanting to buy a great sounding impressive set of headphones
