Cambridge Soundworks Showcases New System

SurroundWorks 200, audio equipment maker says, promises high quality surround sound with a minimum amount of equipment.

Surround sound with a minimum amount of equipment? That’s the premise behind Cambridge Soundworks’ new SurroundWorks 200. This three-piece system, announced today, retails for $999.99.

The SurroundWorks 200 system consists of a multi-channel center speaker, compact subwoofer and the AVS600 DVD/CD/AM/FM control center that can also play DVD-Audio discs. Cambridge Soundworks said that the entire system is wired with just two connecting cables and that it is engineered to recreate surround sound with “invisible speakers”. Essentially, the main speaker consists of a three-driver array housed in a single cabinet. It uses a special surround sound processor to create the effect of multiple speakers.

“SurroundWorks is a perfect alternative for people who don’t want to deal with the management of cables or the complexity of multi speaker surround sound systems, yet want to experience great sounding home theater audio,” said Rob Mainiero, vice president and general manager of Cambridge SoundWorks. “When you listen to SurroundWorks, it’s hard to believe how much a single speaker and subwoofer can create rich surround sound similar to a home theater system with five or more individual speakers.”
