ClearPlay Debuts New Filtering DVD Player

The ClearPlay CP-007 makes use of a USB flash drive or memory card to hold special, controversial "filters" which block out undesired adult content.

ClearPlay, a company which develops DVD player technology for filtering out "violence, profanity and other adult content," announced yesterday they were debuting a new DVD player for families. The ClearPlay CP-007 will be available for sale on the company’s Web site and also through Target for around $80.

ClearPlay, which at one time faced a lawsut because of its filtering technology, claims the pay-for service it offers benefits families by offering advanced parental controls. The technology is described as using "filters that are created specifically for each movie, allowing for frame-specific skips and mutes. The filtering is barely noticeable, and the resulting playback is smooth and effective. ClearPlay offers Filters for over 2200 top movies, and adds more every week when new DVDs are released."

ClearPlay added they’ve received favorable reviews from parents and family organizations, and has received seals of approval from The Parents Television Council and The Dove Foundation. The DVD player itself is programmed via a USB FilterStik flash style drive, with filters downloaded from the ClearPlay Web site for a monthly membership fee. Other USB flash drives and memory cards can reportedly be used as well.

Technology features of the CP-007 include digital audio output, progessive scan, component video output and support for media playback from a variety of disc formats.
