Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) plans to launch 52-inch LCOS TVs in the near future, the company says.
The company expects to become the first LCD panel maker in Taiwan that produces LCOS TVs, the report said.
The current low popularity of LCOS TVs is mainly due to the difficulty in making related chips, the report cited CPT as saying. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) are developing the chips, according to the report.
New display technologies such as LCD, LCOS and DLP have triggered dynamic changes in the RPTV market, where CRT technologies are still the mainstream, according to Riddhi Patel, an analyst with iSuppli. “LCOS has not gained a significant share in the TV market because of the high price of components,” he said. Besides, he also forecast LCOS TV shipments will grow to 387,000 units in 2008, up from 12,000 units last year.
