Epson Lights Up New Home Theater Projectors

EPSONEpson is looking to get into consumers living room and game rooms with two new home theater projectors aiming to let folks have big screen experience at a relatively checkbook-friendly price. The company’s new Home Cinema 705HD projector supports 720p high-definition video, while the MovieMate 60 offers an all-in-one solution with integrated stereo speakers and a CD/DVD player.

Epsons Home Cinema 705HD is a 3LCD projector offering 2,500 lumens of brightness, a 1.2× optical zoom, and a spate of connectivity options, including HDMI, component video, S-Video, and USB. The unit features a 200 Watt high efficiency lamp that should offer up to 5,000 hours of use, and supports video up to 720p resolution. Conversely, the MovieMate 60 only supports standard-definition video, but it packs an integrated CD/DVD player, a 10 Watt stereo speaker system, an integrated microphone jack so folks can talk along with slide shows or (ahem) singing along with karaoke, and a projector lamp offering 2,000 lumens of brightness. Epson isn’t too specific on connectivity options but says the MovieMate 60 will accept HDMI input.

The Home Cinema 705HD should go on sale for an estimated street price of $749.99; the MovieMate 60 should run about $699. Both will be available in October.

YouTube will soon let users try on makeup while watching popular makeup tutorials through augmented reality. Known as AR Beauty Try-On, viewers will be able to actually "try on" the makeup products the online tutorials are showcasing and promoting.

MAC Cosmetics is the first to partner with FameBit for this new feature that will offer realistic product samples that will work on a variety of skin tones. After seeing what different samples and shades would look like on their face, viewers can then purchase the sample they want by clicking through to the makeup brand’s website. Google announced the new feature on Tuesday, and said it would roll out to brands, advertisers and viewers this summer.

Amazon’s new fulfillment center machines pack boxes up to 5x faster than humans

From drone deliveries to checkout-free brick-and-mortar stores, Amazon has made no secret of its desire to automate as many parts of the retail experience as possible. While Amazon employs thousands of people in its fulfillment centers, it may be because it hasn’t yet figured out a way to automate their role. Until now, that is. Things could be about to get even more dicey for human workers as Amazon is reportedly rolling out machines capable of boxing up customer orders.

According to Reuters, Amazon has considered using machines at dozens of warehouses, removing at least 24 roles at each one. Because each machine costs $1 million plus operational expenses, it would likely take Amazon a little under two years to recoup the cost of installing the machines. The machines are manufactured by Italian firm CMC Srl, and are called CartonWrap. They are able to pack up to 700 boxes per hour, which is four to five times the rate of a human packer. Each machine requires a human operator to load customer orders, another to stock cardboard and glue, and a technician to fix jams when and where required.

There's a scene in Mission Impossible 3 that you might recall. In it, our hero Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) tackles the movie's villain, holds him at gunpoint, and forces him to read a bizarre series of sentences aloud.

"The pleasure of Busby's company is what I most enjoy," he reluctantly reads. "He put a tack on Miss Yancy's chair, and she called him a horrible boy. At the end of the month, he was flinging two kittens across the width of the room ..."
