Fandango Buys Movies.com

Comcast's Fandango has bought online movie ticketing service Movies.com from Disney, with plans to build a comprehensive movie site.

Comcast has announced it has acquired online movie ticket service movies.com from media giant Disney. Comcast plans to integrate movies.com with its own Fandango online entertainment and ticket service; movies.com had been using movietickets.com for ticketing sales; Comcast says those functions will now be taken over by Comcast’s own Fandango. Although the terms of the deal were not disclosed, Comcast apparently described the purchase price to the Associated Press as “minimal.”

“We are pleased to expand our rich entertainment reach through this strategic addition of Movies.com,” said Fandango CEO Chuck Davis, in a statement.. “We’ll be able to leverage our combined assets to offer millions of new moviegoers the best movie-related information available on the Web.”

Movies.com garners about two million visitors a month; according to Fandango, there’s little overlap between their existing audience and users of movies.com.

Comcast apparently plans to convert movies.com into a single-stop Web site for movie information. Comcast bought Fandango back in April 2007 for an undisclosed amount. Comcast later launched the movie and entertainment Web site Fancast.com that offers television episodes, movie trailers, and entertainment information.
