Gefen Device Extends DVI, Sound

The new Gefen DVI Audio Extender extends both analog and digital audio formats in addition to HD video up to 150 feet away.

Gefen, a maker of home theatre multi-platform extension, switching, distribution and conversion devices, today announced a new product which focuses on extending analog and digital audio in addition to HD video. The new DVI Audio Extender is priced at $649 and should be available now.

The Gefen DVI Audio Extender, said Gefen, includes six-foot DVI and audio RCA cables in addition to two external power supplies (one on each end) and the sender/receiver units. The idea behind this device is to extend your DVI and digital/analog audio up to 150 feet away from your HDTV DVI or HDMI source using CAT-5 cables.

The sender/receiver units come equipped with S/PDIF (digital coax), optical TOSlink and left/right analog RCA audio inputs and outputs that drive multiple audio devices at the same time, according to Gefen. HDTV visuals up to 1080p (1920×1200) and multi-c hannel stereo audio are transferred between the units, with an average speed of 12.8 Mb/s.

The DVI Audio Extender is also HDCP compliant.

Also is the quality compromised at that range?
