One Terabyte of information on a single disc sounds too good to be true, but its a reality. Using holographic technology you could store tons of movies on a single disc.
“HVD is a possible successor to technologies such as Blu-ray and HD DVD. Single layer Blu-ray discs hold about 25GB of data while dual-layer discs hold 50GB. Ordinary DVD discs, meanwhile, hold about 4.7GB. HVD technology will be pitched at corporations and the entertainment market, the HVD Alliance said. ”
The story from Cnet mentions Fuji Photo and CMC Magnentics as two of the companies supporting the new technology, but there is no mention of the others.
It looks like the organization is looking at smaller capacity discs using the same holographic technology before releasing a one terabyte sized disc.
