You’d think that in the second decade of the 21st century, cords, wires, and antennas would be rendered obsolete. While we’re still on our way to a completely wireless lifestyle, IKEA has come up with an immediate solution to our hatred for cables with the UPPLEVA entertainment system that can discreetly hide your wires so you can enjoy a sleek and clutter-free room.
The UPPLEVA system contains a smart TV that has all the outlets, USB, and HDMI slots along the sides, so it maintains a thin exterior. All the cable wires can be stored in the back of the television stand to keep them out of sight. And a universal remote control will be able to access all of these devices, sending sensor through the doors so you can keep everything looking minimal.
The smart TV that comes with the set boasts full high definition display, LED technology, Wi-Fi integration, and 2.1 surround sound system. The built-in media player is capable of running Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. The external speaker is also cordless, and can be placed anywhere in the room. If these included accessories aren’t enough, cable boxes, video game consoles, and digital video recorders can also be kept in the storage compartment behind a wooden or plastic flap. Now, no matter what tech gadgets you own for your home theater, everything will look uniformed.
“We’ve had very clear signals from customers that there is a need to be able to buy and integrate home electronics with the furniture in a simple way,” IKEA Sweden sales chief Tolga Oncu told Reuters. ”With the way IKEA works, the way we can offer our products at the lowest prices on the market, we are convinced that this will be a really big success.”
The UPPLEVA set is also customizable, so you can pick your favorite frame color or screen size to suit your needs. We’re not expecting this to be a simple construction with an allen wrench, so be prepared to get our your big boy tools. (It is currently unclear whether the TV and media player come fully assembled — but we’re guessing they do.) The UPPLEVA set will start at 6,500 Swedish crowns, or approximately $960 USD, for the basic bench, television, and sound system combination. Considering how televisions these days are becoming more affordable than ever, the price tag seems quite reasonable for a modern and simple take on furniture design.
Expect to find the UPPLEVA system in showrooms across Stockholm, Milan, Paris, Gdansk, and Berlin as early as June 2012. It will also be introduced in Sweden, Italy, France, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Norway, and Portugal later this fall, and a worldwide release is slated to follow next year.
