re ttusb10: I went to the pink slip site for the new version of ezcv, but the version listed for download was version 2.something. The CD that came with my unit says it is version 5.0. Does this mean that I should use the CD rather than download ?

On re-reading, that seems unclear. To clarify: set playback to be via your soundcard. (It is likely currently set to be via USB Codec.)

I had the same "no sound when playing recorded tracks" problem. The ION site has a cure. The FAQs on http://www.ionaudio.com/ionttusb describe the process in more detail (sorry can't link directly to it), but the basic fix (in XP) is to go to Control Panel>Sound & Audio Devices, then the Audio tab of the dialog box. Set playback from USB to your sound card.
