Is Samsung The New Sony?

Several news sites are reporting that Samsung is to be considered the 'New Sony' due to its success in the consumer electronics industry.

Quote from the article published by the New York Times:

“Less than a decade later, Samsung now has twice the market capitalization of Sony, which this week named Sir Howard its chairman.

Nor is Samsung Sony’s only rival. Apple Computer now dominates the market for portable music players. Silicon Valley companies have led the way in digital gadgets like handheld personal organizers and digital video recorders. Sony is even facing strong competition from Kodak and Canon for digital cameras, a product category it invented.”

Arguably Sony has stumbled in the CE industry over the past few years due to proprietary designs, high prices and less technological innovation than what is expected from the company. Sony should have had the portable digital audio market nailed, except they made the huge mistake of solely supporting their proprietary ATRAC music format instead of adding MP3, WMV compatibility.
