Are Jabra’s Sport Pulse wireless earbuds the holy grail for athletes?

Some athletes might call a lightweight pair of wireless earbuds that work like a fitness band the holy grail of fitness wearables. This elusive product remains hard to come by because wireless headphones require a battery. Plus, batteries that can power a Bluetooth device for a useful duration tend to be bulky. Bulky battery means bulky headphones.

Thankfully, Jabra, perhaps best known for its Bluetooth headsets and speaker products, has begun to crack the code. Announced earlier this year and shown off for the first time at IFA 2014, the Jabra Sport Pulse Wireless Earbuds are a compact pair of in-ear headphones that seat securely, and pair with your smartphone. On top of that, in conjunction with a smartphone app, it tracks your workout, and coaches you through it.

Built into the earbuds are a heart rate monitor and a motion sensor which, combined, can not only track your movement, but the intensity of your movement as well. Paired with a smartphone’s GPS, this combined information allows Jabra’s Sport Life fitness app to monitor your progress towards pre-defined goals, and helps you stay on the path to achieving them.

Jabra’s Enhance Plus hearing aid earbuds are $799

Jabra last year announced its Enhance Plus true wireless earbuds -- the first from the company to incorporate hearing aid technology, They are aimed at giving folks with mild to moderate hearing loss many of the benefits of medical-grade hearing aids in a design that looks no different than the hundreds of other wireless earbuds on the market. We now know how much they'll cost ($799) and when folks will be able to buy them in the U.S. (February 25, 2022, only at select hearing care clinics).

The new earbuds, which come in dark gray or gold beige, have four sound-processing features designed to improve how you hear in a variety of settings like restaurants and work meetings. According to Jabra, they are:

Jabra adds Bluetooth Multipoint to Elite 7 Pro/Active earbuds

When Jabra launched its newest flagship wireless earbuds -- the Elite 7 Pro and Elite 7 Active -- fans and reviewers were both quick to note that the company appeared to have abandoned Bluetooth Multipoint, which lets you connect the earbuds to two devices simultaneously. But as of January 27, that missing feature is back, via new firmware that can be updated through the Jabra Sound+ app for both iOS and Android.

Bluetooth Multipoint, while quite common on wireless headphones, is still a rarity in the wireless earbuds world. That's why it was a bit painful to see the Elite 7 Pro and Elite 7 Active launch without it. Their predecessors, the Elite 75t and Elite Active 75t, both had the feature, as do the current Elite 85t. Seeing it absent from the Elite 7 Pro/Active's feature list was a genuine surprise.

Jabra’s most affordable workout earbuds debut at CES 2022

Jabra is using CES 2022 to bring our attention to the newest member of its Elite family of true wireless earbuds: The $119 Elite 4 Active, a set of waterproof, active noise canceling (ANC) earbuds that fit between the $99 Elite 3 and the $180 Elite 7 Active. They're available starting January 3, in navy, black and light mint.

Like the more expensive Elite 7 Active, Jabra says the Elite 4 Active offer a secure and comfortable fit without the need for hooks or wingtips, but don't expect the 4 Active to be quite as secure as the 7 -- they don't have the 7's ShakeGrip rubber coating. With an IP57 rating, however, the Elite 4 Active have the same level of protection from water and dust as the Elite 7 Active.
