NFL games to go high-definition

This fall, NFL viewers will be able to see games on TV like never before. At least three games per week will be televised in high-definition format.

Provided you have the proper hardware, the images will be broadcast so clear that you’ll be able to make out individual fans in the stands.

CBS, ESPN and ABC will each televise HDTV NFL games, beginning with ABC’s telecast of the Washington Redskins and the New York Jets on Sept. 4. Local DirecTV HD viewers can see ESPN’s “Sunday Night Football” and all HD-equipped viewers can watch “Monday Night Football” on ABC (WSOC-TV) via over-the-air or digital cable.

To receive the high-definition broadcasts, viewers will need an HD television and an HD receiver.

The increase in high definition broadcasts is a huge jump over 2002, when only a few playoff games and the Super Bowl were in HD. Many HDTV telecasts also include Dolby Digital sound, available for viewers with Dolby Digital equipped audio/video receivers. The format gives you the feeling of being surrounded by the fans at the stadium.

This “will be the year of HDTV,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association.
