Panasonic expands speaker lineup, adds sleek and slim HC and NE series

Check out our review of the Panasonic SC-NE5 speaker.

Last week, Panasonic announced two new speaker series and six new personal audio units, expanding its lineup for 2013. The two new series are the the HC series – which comprises three iPod speaker docks – and the NE series, which comprises three wireless speakers.

HC Series – The HC Series consists of three models, the SC-HC58, SC-HC38 and SC-HC28. The HC58 and HC38 are both Bluetooth-enabled, while the HC58 can also utilize AirPlay. All models feature a lightening pin connector, designed to fit the iPhone5 and 5th generation iPod Touch, while the H58 and 38 also sport a USB cable to charge older iPhones, pods, and pads.

The three speakers are described as “sleek and slim,” and, though we don’t have a ton of info on specs, we know that the HC58 utilizes a “nanosized bamboo” speakers,  and includes dual passive radiators to beef up bass response. Bluetooth and AirPlay models are compatible with Panasonic’s Music Streaming App, available in Apple’s App Store or through Google Play. No word yet on price, but all models are expected to release in March 2013.

NE Series – The NE Series also consists of three models, the SC-NE1, SC-NE3, and SC-NE5. The NE5 and NE3 are Bluetooth, DLNA, and AirPlay-enabled, while the NE1 supports only Bluetooth. All models include a Nanosized Bamboo Cone Speaker, a three-inch woofer and a one-inch tweeter. All are also compatible with the Panasonic Music Streaming App, available in Apple’s App Store or through Google Play.

At this point, the three models seem to differ only in terms of connectivity, aesthetic, and price point, but stay tuned for more info. The NE1, 3, and 5, are expected to retail for $200, $300, and $450 respectively, and will be available in March 2013.

Though the company has endured its share of struggles, last week’s CES 2013 seemed to be a solid one for Panasonic. Looks like its not ready to relinquish its hard-won brand-name clout just yet.
