Philips adds broadband to DVD recorder’s

The semiconductor division of Royal Philips Electronics has announced that it is adding broadband connectivity to the reference design of its DVD recorders.

Adding a specialised media chip to the design will allow DVD recorders to process multiple media formats, including MPEG-4, and enable connection to the internet. According to News.com, Philips initally plans to market the design to electronics manufacturers in Japan and South Korea, where broadband access is more widely adopted.

“This platform will be for the high end of the consumer electronics market and will help our customers to differentiate their products,” a representative from Philips told News.com. “There will be a premium that will be charged for these features.”
