Photos: Apple updates new Apple TV with 1080p, iCloud streaming, and more

At its media event in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Apple announced  an updated version of the Apple TV. Referred to simply as  “the new Apple TV,” the  set-top box will be capable of 1080p video output and benefit from a new streamlined interface similar to what we have experience from iOS.

Additionally, Apple has updated the Apple TV with fully integrated iCloud video streaming, which will now allow users to access movies on top of music and television shows. According to Apple, the device will cost $99 and go on sale March 16 and is available to pre-order starting today.

As we've written previously, tvOS 17 opened the floodgates for VPNs to run on Apple TV hardware. And the major players are all on board, along with some you've likely never heard of because not everyone has a huge marketing budget. First it was ExpressVPN, and today NordVPN has announced its availability.

Whereas some companies tout a VPN's ability to let you watch content that's not available in your country — literally by routing your network traffic through another country — NordVPN is going with scare tactics in promoting its virtual private network on Apple TV.

YouTube’s enhanced 1080p video now available on more devices

While it's not unheard of, it was a little odd for iOS devices to get first dibs when YouTube introduced 1080p "Premium" video. But all is now right in the world — "we heard our users loud and clear," YouTube says — as YouTube Premium subscribers now can enjoy that better-looking video on Android devices, on smart TVs, and in a web browser.

YouTube announced the additional devices today on its official YouTube blog.
