TV network Starz Encore will launch an online movie service along with RealNetworks next week, paidContent.org has learned.
The service will a hybrid download-streaming service, in the same spirit as how Real’s Rhapsody and music download play off each other. In essence, the service will offer about 100 movies for download every month, and unlimited streaming options, for $12 a month. Both the companies refused to comment, but the formal announcement is expected early next week.
The movies are only playable in the RealNetworks’ RealPlayer, and would have some strict DRM rules built into it. The downloads will be active for the month only, as long as the subscribers keep renewing their subscription to the service. It is not clear if the companies have any plans of offering a separate download-only, pay-per-movie service, for now.
