There’s now a Popcorn Time for porn

Popcorn Time has been equally praised and maligned for its technology, which lets users access streaming torrents in a style akin to Netflix. Now there’s a Popcorn Time-like service for pornography, simply dubbed Porn Time.

The obviously NSFW site does exactly what it is says on the tin. Much like what Popcorn Time does for movie and TV shows, Porn Time’s app locates and downloads the torrent you want and plays the video file back. The app is currently available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Porn Time is based on Popcorn Time’s code, and sources its torrents from torrent site PornLeech — but says it will be adding more sources over the next few months. The app makes no apologies for being exactly like Popcorn Time except for its adult content and relies on BitTorrent peer-to-peer technology and seeding to speed up the load time for clips.

“Popcorn Time has been around for more than a year now, and my friends and I were waiting for someone to pick up this damn glove …,” the creators wrote on their blog [safe for work]. “But seeing no one did, and after seeing many people asking for this in Popcorn Time’s social hubs, we said to ourselves ‘Heck! Why don’t we give it a try?’”

Popcorn Time itself has had a tumultuous history, having faced great criticism over providing unlawful access to copyrighted content. In the UK, the site has been banned under the same laws that blocked The Pirate Bay.

The porn industry is no different that others when it comes to the difficulties posed by illegal torrenting and tube sites as well as the challenges of declining DVD sales. Studios and performers have in the past pleaded with Google to help them promote legitimate ways of accessing adult content, something that Google already does with films and TV with links to Netflix, Amazon, etc. Whether or not Porn Time will leave another serious dent in the adult entertainment industry’s bottom line remains to be seen.
