lg 72 inch 3dtv prototype-poster

We gawk at the beautiful 72-inch LG 3D display perched on the wall.

LG is pushing its self through the onslaught of Japanese tech heavyweights, like Sony and Panasonic, and making its way to the 3D TV forefront. The company debuted a working (beautifully working) prototype of a 72-inch LCD 3D TV at CES this week. 3D technology hit the CES showroom pretty hard this year and we were lucky enough to take in eye-fulls of this new innovation.

  1. Jeff B. at 10:21pm 17th January 2011 I just bought one of these. Not sure why you all are commenting on how good or bad it is when you don't even have one. I have one and I'm watching the Social Network on it now in Blu-Ray. It looks F_cking Amazing!!! If I didn't already have a GF - I'd be having sex with it!!

  3. Quattro-Dimensional at 6:34am 18th December 2010 72" is not that big but it is a great size. case in point, I had a 67" 3d ready led dlp (and a lamp based 67" dlp before that). Like many ppl I started small at 42" (even smaller before that but 42" was first flat screen size), then 50" i think, then by some circumstance got the 50" exchanged for 60" which at first I thought was too big and asked the mrs. and brother etc. if it was too much and they said now way its great (back when HD first came out so it was great but sd looked bad) and this was back when it was rear projection lcd (if anyone remembers those). then went from 60 to 67" and loved 67" (with the dlp) ever since but then could never go back to anything smaller. Then along comes 3d tv and Samsung abaondons dlp including their 3d ready led dlp's and the largest they make is 55". so what about the ppl that had 61, 67 and even 72" dlp (67 was the largest led dlp though)? Well I wasn't going to go down 12" to 55 so I had to wait a pretty long time for the Panasonic 65" 3d plasma and if you didn't like plasma then even longer for the 65" samsung 3d led lc. But still 65" is still the biggest so what about ppl that had 67" or larger and wanted the same or bigger as next tv not smaller. Some ppl still love even the lamp based dlps and have 73 or 82" size which are 3d and for 3d if you've watched it you know you want the biggest possible as its more immersive. Then a year or so ago news about Vizio coming out with a thin 3d led lcd 72" for a reasonable price, but then it got canceled. probably samsung, sony and panasonic as the 3 major 3d tv makers paying them off not to make it to make thier max size 55" sets look small. LG makes Vizio's panels so a Vizio is a chance to get an LG cheap. so now the 72" resurfaces as LG's own model and still its set not to come out till q2 2011. Finally something 67" or larger in a thin 3d led lcd. Hopefully samsung sony and panasonic follow suit. The 72" cant come soon enough as its a great size and much needed. of course the ppl wiht 73 and 82" mitsu 3d dlp also probably have them for great value in size for price so unless they are suddenly ready to splurge will wait for the 72" LG to come down and it will eventually and others in those sizes will come. so in summary, flat panel 3d tvs in sizes larger then 65" is long over due (and still only 2 even at 65" one of which just came out, is hard to come by and supposedly set to be discontinued). Hopefully also Vizio is then allowd to put out their 72" as a cheaper alternative to the LG. sadly though in looking at the video, the bezel is thicker then the LG 55" which has the thinnest bezel of any tv i've seen yet i think so its mostly all screen from end to end. that would help make a 72" not take up too much space or seem too big but maybe they couldn't do it with the 72" or it made it too expensive. super thin (and hopefully light cus believe it or not the samsung 65" 3d led lcd is heavier then the 67" led dlp) 3d tvs's that are have little to no bezel will come eventually and like i said with little to no bezel plus thin and light makes 72" not seem so big.
  4. zingzang at 3:25am 11th June 2010 Also, I resent that you said I'm blind. Instead maybe you are a typical college kid trying to define the average person. Most average people have at least one or two possessions that they like. Maybe it's a nice bike, or skis, or scuba gear. Or maybe it's their car. But most people that own a HOUSE and are perhaps a little older, can afford a big tv if they save up for it and want it that much. Unless however they don't have jobs, or they have 4 kids and a low paying job. And I feel for those people, but don't tell me I'm blind. I grew up POOR and worked hard to get where I am. If I want a Big TV, I'm not going to feel bad because some lame jerk hinted I should. You're probably the writer of this blog in disguise anyway.
  5. zingzang at 3:18am 11th June 2010 No, 72" is BIG, but not crazy big. Let's define. 32 inch to 45 inch, the size for someone with an apartment however I've known people to get MUCH bigger for their apartments up to 65 inch if they love TV. 50-55 inch is typical and can be had for between $700 and $1800 depending on what kind. At 65 inch people are throwing in some extra, but you could a get a DLP one for $1500, and perhaps $2700 to $3000 for higher end 3D LCD. But it's not that big. Point is at 72 inches it will fit in most small homes unless they have a lot of junk around. And it would fit in most family rooms. Granted most would get 60 - 65 inches tops about 3 years ago, things are changing because prices are dropping.

At $3500 it's expensive, but considering it will last 10 years or more, it's not that expensive. I've seen kids in college spend over $15,000 for a car when a $3000 car would have sufficed. So it's not a matter of being privileged as you say. Instead maybe you are poor. Maybe it's not your fault, but don't fault others because they find a $3500 TV within reach. And finally DLP's can look great. It doesn't matter if they aren't quite as good as LCD. The point is people can get 65 inch to 72 inch screens. IT'S 2010, not 2000!!! And finally the original article text and pictures have all been changed. So nothing here is relevant any more anyway.
  6. Guest at 2:46pm 3rd April 2010 72" is crazy big for an LCD TV. Most people wouldn't have that size for a large family room. Then again, maybe you're just so privileged that you're blind to how the average person lives. DLP =/= LCD
  7. zingzang at 1:42am 30th March 2010 The guy sounds like an idiot and should be fired. 72 inch is big, but not a crazy size. It's about how big you would have it for a large family room. And lots of people have DLP's about that size. 65 inch is a nice one. But 72 gives you that extra feeling of big. The 100 inch he joked of is just silly. But if it were super cheap, I'd reconsider ;-). Finally a perfect sized big screen that is sort of affordable. We paid $5400 for our 65 inch CRT projection 9 years back. So $3400 isn't that bad considering that within one year, it will likely be $2700. Expensive, but not super crazy expensive.
