$1.75M Cold War cabin is the perfect place to bunker down for zombie apocalypse

It might be the holiday season, but that is no excuse to grow complacent. If we have learned anything from movies like Zombieland and shows like The Walking Dead, it’s that the end is nigh and it won’t be long before the zombie apocalypse is upon us. In fact who knows, the zombie virus could very well sit in a lab right now, being worked on by some mad scientist, just waiting to happen upon humanity. So while you dream of a shiny new iPad or the keys to a new car, you might contemplate asking instead for some shooting lessons and start stockpiling all the Twinkies you can get your hands on. In fact, it might even be wise for you to start counting those coppers now, and saving for a proper pad that will protect you from the bleak reality we may yet face.

And what better personal fortress to shield you and your loved ones from brain-chomping zombies than this idyllic cabin nestled deep within New York’s Adirondack State Park. The 2,000-square-foot cabin sits atop a Cold War era missile silo and is currently on the market for $1.75 million dollars. Entry into the basement reveals two large living areas, formerly a launch control center, with entertainment and dining areas, two bedroom suites, and 10-foot tall ceilings. The surrounding area is primarily forest, granting a sweeping and stunning view of the state park and the large open windows offer ample natural lighting and warmth.

Deeper underground, the beautiful home opens up even further. The missile silo underneath adds an additional nine stories, making a perfect space to house other desperate survivors or bunker down, should things get ugly top-side. The former Cold War cabin also features an airfield — add some mounted turrets, a munitions cache that would have made Charlton Heston jealous, and this survival kit, and all of a sudden the zombie apocalypse might not be so bad. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you when jolly old Saint Nick shimmies down your chimney and turns out to be a zombie.

Yale’s newest smart lock is designed for renters
The Yale Approach installed on a door.

Yale -- the company responsible for the well-reviewed Assure Lock 2 -- has just launched its first retrofit smart lock built specifically for renters. The Yale Approach Lock with Wi-Fi is an interior-only smart lock that fits on top of most standard deadbolts, allowing renters to bring a bit of smart functionality to their home without the need to replace the underlying hardware.

Installing the Yale Approach should take just 10 minutes and doesn't require much more than a screwdriver.
