Super-Sedans

So you want a true family car, one with actual leg-room in the back seats, but you still like to make out to track days every now and then.  BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz have each created what could be called a super-sedan.  Each of these cars starts in the mid-fifty thousand dollar price range, comes with a custom-built V8 producing over 400 HP, and can get to 60 MPH in about 4.5 seconds. All three cars qualify as a comfortable and stylish daily driver – they are refined with all of the standard luxuries you would expect from BMW, Mercedes, or Lexus.  All in all you are not sacrificing any comfort by choosing one of these as a daily driver, and when it comes to track day they will still perform with the best.

And how much will it cost? Going through those mental hurdles will keep folks away from making the switch to an EV -- even if the reality is that it's not as complicated as it seems.

To help accelerate the EV transition, and more importantly provide the necessary infrastructure for anyone who already has an EV, a consortium of automakers has announced a massive investment in EV chargers in North America. The group of seven major companies -- BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis -- is investing collectively in installing a whopping 30,000 EV chargers along major highways and in urban areas.

For more than 50 years, AMG has been turning Mercedes luxury cars into race cars and hot rods—and the performance division is now working its magic on EVs. We’ve already gotten AMG versions of the Mercedes-Benz EQS and EQE sedans, but AMG is now upping the difficulty level with an electric SUV.

2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance first drive review: high-performance plug-in
Front three quarter view of the 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance.

It's a time of transition at Mercedes-Benz. The venerable automaker is looking toward an electric future with EVs like the EQS, while introducing updated versions of its traditional internal-combustion models like the S-Class. The 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance bridges the gap.

For those not fluent in Mercedes-speak, AMG is the automaker's performance version, and the S63 is a hot-rodded version of the S-Class. This 2024 model is the latest in a long line of big, powerful Mercedes sedans that combine limousine-like luxury with sports-car thrust. But this time, there's a twist.
