AMD Cutting 500 Jobs

In the second wave of cuts this year, AMD has announced that it will be shedding another 500 jobs.

In April, AMD underwent some restructuring and let around 1,600 employees go. Now the company has announced it will add to that total, with about 500 more jobs to be cut, around 3% of the company’s total workforce, Vnunet reports.

The layoffs will be spread throughout the company, AMD said, and are a cost-cutting measure.

It’s probably not too surprising, give the state of the economy, and the fact that AMD has never quite managed to recover from eight quarters of losses. Those were initially sparked by the $5.4 billion acquisition of graphic card specialist ATI in 2006, and compounded by a further series of events, included the slower-than-expected development of new chips and the decision to spin off its fabrication operations.
