Skype Handles Eight Per Cent Of All International Calls

New data shows that VoIP company Skype is now handling a staggering eight per cent of all international calls.

Skype has become the brand name among VoIP companies. So perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise to read new data from analysts TeleGeography that reveals the company now handles 8% of all international phone calls.

But it shows that a growing number of people are accepting VoIP as a normal thing. While international calling grew by 12% in 2008, Skype’s year-on-year growth was a remarkable 41%, logging 33 billion minutes last year.

In a statement, TeleGeography analyst Stephan Beckert said:

"Skype’s traffic growth has been remarkable. Only five years after its launch, Skype has emerged as the largest provider of cross-border voice communications in the world."

Of those 33 billion minutes, 8.4 billion used the paid ‘Skype Out’ service.
