YouTube Vs. Sen. Lieberman

There have been angry words between Senator Joe Lieberman and YouTube over the video-sharing site hosting content by Al-Queda and other terrorist groups.

It’s not a war of words, but there have been some angry exchanges between Senator Joe Lieberman and YouTube about the video-hosting site displaying content by Al-Queda, along with other terrorist groups antagonistic to the US.

Lieberan’s initial complaint came after seeing videos showing the killing of American troops along with other propaganda videos. He was outraged by what he saw and made a demand that YouTube remove them.

"Protecting our citizens from terrorist attacks is a top priority for our government. The private sector can help us do that," Lieberman said. "By taking action to curtail the use of YouTube to disseminate the goals and methods of those who wish to kill innocent civilians, Google will make a singularly important contribution to this important national effort."

YouTube did remove around 80 videos, but has refused to do more, stating that the content does not violate its terms. That’s infuriated the Senator, who believes all terrorist propaganda should be removed. In a blog post, YouTube responded by saying:

"While we respect and understand his views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone’s right to express unpopular points of view. We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds."

  1. steveking at 8:14pm 1st June 2008 YouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune.

YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time.

Manual download is not the only option with YouTube Robot. You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed). For example, you can plug in iPod, select the video, go to bed, and when you wake up next morning, your iPod will be ready to play new YouTube videos.

  2. Kevin at 7:42am 22nd May 2008 This is absolutely absurd; especially when Google (who now owns YouTube) turned over private information to India, about one of its' users... who merely posted a negative message about Sonia Ghandi. Talk about double standards.

So, let me get this straight... YouTube/Google will allow video footage of American soldiers being killed by terrorists... BUT, they won't allow a video of a puppy being thrown over a cliff?

Now, I don't condone either action, of course, and the puppy video was absolutely sickening (assuming it was still alive, and not just a practical, yet sick, joke), but if you're going to have a policy about disturbing/controversial footage, it should hold true for everything that meets the requirements.

Strike two for Google... shame on them.
