As long as there has been the concept of curfew, there have been attempts to circumvent it. Who, after all, wouldn’t chafe against the idea of having someone else restrict your freedom, even if it’s simply by defining a specific time you have to be home by, or how long you’re allowed to be online? Two teenagers in California, however, have taken the rebellion to new lengths – the pair are facing accusations of drugging one of the teens’ parents just to stay online for a few hours more.
The surreal story goes something like this: A couple in the Northern California city of Rocklin have a rule that says they switch off their Internet at home at 10 p.m. every night. Their 15-year-old daughter, like any 21st century teen, obviously wasn’t a fan of this rule and decided to do something about it – if, by “something,” you mean “buying shakes for her parents with a friend and using those shakes to drug her parents so that they’d fall asleep before 10 p.m. and leave her online for as long as she wanted.”
Her plan worked; despite not finishing the shakes because they “tasted funny and were grainy,” her parents both dozed off, doped, without switching the Internet off, and woke at 1 a.m., feeling something similar to a hangover. When that feeling persisted the next day, the two decided to investigate, buying a $5 drug testing kit from the local police station and getting a positive result.
As a result of that positive result, the parents brought their daughter to the police station, which led to the girl and her 16-year-old friend – who reportedly provided the drugs in question from her home in nearby Roseville – charged with willfully mingling a pharmaceutical into food and conspiracy. In her defense, the unnamed 15-year-old reportedly told police that her parents’ Internet policy was “too strict.”
Talking to the Guardian, Rocklin PD lieutenant Lon Milka said that, following the positive drug test, the parents “developed enough information in order to bring their daughter [to the station].” Milka refused to elaborate further on the case, citing California state law which limits the amount of information that can be made public when it comes to crimes concerning juveniles. He did say that the amount of medication used by the two teenagers was still unknown and part of the ongoing investigation.
Milka also expressed that most juvenile crime in the city is along fairly minor lines like alcohol and drug use, with the occasional incident of vandalism. When it comes to juvenile drug use, he said, he’s more used to teens using the drugs themselves instead of incidents “where they are endangering or mingling the pharmaceuticals with [a] milkshake.”
“This is way out of line,” he said. We couldn’t agree more.
Ya know… Just for that I would cancel my internet. Or, just put a mac filter on my router and be done with it. If she had a cellphone and laptop, I would take those away as well. Lesson learn her dear. Don’t F with a network admin. You want to be cute and drug your parents. They will be cute and cut you off.
You are so badass. IT ninja
Do that, and she will rebel again. Simple psychology, people are selfish by nature, but they dont like it when other selfish individuals hurt them or take their things. That is why society formed…to abstain from the selfish acts if its a communal agreement. Within this agreement, compassion and respect must be shown. With the acts you talk about the teen will under go extreme hatred and contempt for her parents only worsening the problem.
Everyone is different. You can’t throw a blanket statement out there and expect everyone to fall under it. Rules are set in society and the vast majority of us follow them. By your logic, we would all be criminals and law breakers because our egos can’t handle people telling us no. I know plenty of people who have ground rules set with their children as far as computer and cellphone use, who are turning out just fine and have a loving trusting relationship. Most of my rules wouldn’t be out of lack of trust for the child. They would due to a need to unplug. We can not stay connected 24/7. This is established from the time they are born, so nothing is new by the time they become teenagers. It’s all about how you approach it, and how to initiate it.
This is why our children don’t respect us anymore. We are so afraid of disciplining them because we think it will make things worse. Not having your children’s respect is going to ruin the child more than anything. They will not learn respect for themselves, if they cannot respect the ones that take care of them. We are born with the need for food, warmth, and safety, anything above this, is just a perk! Kids need to learn not to bite the hand that feeds them, or in this case “drug”. These girls really need to get their butts in check, and be punished severely! Yes, by the Justice System, so they know the consequences adults receive, and so they know that life is more valuable than the internet. Yes!!! THEY COULD HAVE EASILY KILLED THIS GIRLS PARENTS!!! Hello, this isn’t just sneaking out, or going somewhere they shouldn’t have!!!
This is a little more serious than just taking away her internet, JesterKing. How did they know the parents weren’t allergic to the drug they were lacing the shakes with? They didn’t. How did they know they were only going to drink part of the shakes? They didn’t. Her parents could have overdosed, or died. This very well could have been a murder instead of an insanely stupid story. These girls need to be incarcerated for a very long time.
They have taken for granted their loving parents. They have abused the privelage of a good home. How could their parents be assured they weren’t going to kill them in their sleep so they could drive the family car? They are not to be trusted.
These girls still haven’t taken responsibility because they are blaming their parents for being too strict with the internet. They are spoiled beyond reason and need a taste of the real world.
They are CHILDREN They should be punished by their parents not the american Justice system.
This is just a sad story. I still don’t get it >.>
@MRHACKER95 this is not a “We will handle this at home” situation these children committed and assault on their parents introduced drugs to their parents in a conspiracy and have violated the most basic and fundemental elements of a parent child relationship. They not only need to be incarcerated in juvenile criminal court, but also must be made to make restitution and sent to a mental health facility where they can be monitored. These children drugged their parents and conspired to do committ a crime so they could stay up on the computer….This is a flag of worse yet to come no boundaries and goes beyond teenage rebellion…
looool if you can’t control your family just have the police give them a spanking instead, clearly you dont have any psychological issues, AT ALL, left over from your high school days, i buy it
Spank them, there would be hell to pay and they would wish I had called the police….but then again I am not afraid to parent and get on my kids case, In cases like this though seriously the last thing I am worriedd about is the little angels fragile egos, this is a wake up call, I feared retribution from my father, and the police because he was the police Literally NYPD…..these girls went to far….really. It is scary. ID Discovery did an episode on a teen girl who lost her damned mind and when her grandparents put their foot down she killed them dead….
This girl should get a sound beating. If she is willing to drug her parents over longer internet time, what else is she willing to do to get her way? She’s a train wreck waiting to happen. I think we may be reading about her in the future..
I have similar problems with the IPOD issue of all hours of the night and morning, I simply take it from her.
WTH? I understand to a certain extent about a restraining order on parents if they control every aspect of your life, but this is absolutely ridiculous. I mean it’s just retarded and she’s not going to get even with them if that’s what her idea was… Frigging unbelievable!!
Two words to describe how I’d handle all of my offending kid’s internet-capable possessions:
Will…it…blend
Two words to describe how I’d handle my offending kid’s behavior shortly thereafter:
military…school
Or, you know, you could sell them.
what would they have done if they overdose there parents.
We aren’t dealing with a teen of the times which traditional FEAR of parental and/or police intervention would keep them in line….. beating them isn’t the answer either…spanking is not effective at this stage in their development.
Look how many cases hit the news that provide a chiiling look at the realities of these kids who get upset with their parents or other family members. Kids kill for many reasons and how does a parent know how to differentiate between keeping it hushed or if they should call authorities? It’s sad, yes, that they called in police but maybe by doing that they may have saved not only their own lives from future attacks but other innocent lives as well.
If in doubt of what motivates kids to harm or kill their families…. one such case is in the news locally here that sends shivers through me as a parent and wonder how this happens in a good loving family. Drugs cause kids to have a skewed sense of reality and its’ repercussions.

If in doubt read that one.
xvixenx
haha sounds like they were watching way too much TV. But it worked! Smart kids. Too bad they didn’t hide their tracks, obviously their parents knew who did it to them.
TECHFREAK, you find this amusing and a good thing?
Have fun in juvy, idiot.
The story sounds fake. A 15yo gets drugs, puts enough in to make it “grainy”, this supposedly knocks the parents out until 1am, at which point they feel a hangover and are able to verify the whole thing with a $5 drug test they got at the local drugstore.
I don’t believe a word of it. Something may have happened between that kid, the parents and the cops, but this cockamaymie story ain’t it.
