Facebook Passes MySpace

Facebook Passes MySpace

Facebook has nudged further ahead of MySpace in June, with a greater number of unique visitors and page views, building on the tiny lead it garnered in April.

It used to be that, for all the talk of Facebook, MySpace was more popular in terms of unique monthly visitors and page views. That began to change in April, according to metrics company comScore, but the gap really became noticeable in May.

During the month, Facebook logged 123.9 million unique visitors, moving well ahead of MySpace 114.6 million, while it logged 50.6 billion page views, compared to MySpace’s 45.4 billion.

However, if you just look at the US, MySpace is still very much in the lead, according to comScore. There, during May, MySpace showed an impressive 73.7 million unique visitors compared to Facebook’s 35.6 million.

MySpace has had translated versions of its site globally for the last two years, with a total of 29 local versions, a strategy Facebook only announced in January this year – but then, MySpace has been around longer, founded in 2003, a year before its rival, and owned by News Corp since 2005. By contrast, Facebook was initially just aimed at students.
