Is Kindle 2 Coming?

There are plenty of rumors flying around that Amazon is preparing to introduce a new version of its Kindle e-reader next month.

Based on pictures that show a sleeker model, rumors have been going around for months that Amazon will be introducing a new version of its Kindle e-reader. The company is neither confirming nor denying reports, but has said it will be holding a press conference on February 9, to be attended by chief executive Jeff Bezos.

The Kindle was launched in November 2007, and allows users to store and read up to 200 books on the reader. Retailing for $359, it has a six-inch screen and 256 MB of memory, with books available for download (in the US only) via the Whispernet wireless download system.

They system sold out on its launch, and purchasers still face a four to six week wait for their unit, although exact sales figures are murky, according to the Guardian.

Amazon is set to release its financial figures today, and analysts are eager to see them after the company claimed its “best ever” holiday season. Given the recession, some are wondering just how good the numbers will be.
