MySpace Adds Celebrities to Friends List

MySpace Adds Celebrities to Friends List

MySpace has launched a new celebrities channel where you can peruse profiles of more than 300 celebrities like Ashton Jutcher, Janie Foxx, Zach Braff...and Britney Spears.

Facebook might be getting all the media attention lately, but MySpace is still the 800-pound gorilla of the social networking sphere, and its never shown any hesitation to hitch its wagon to anything that might bring eyeballs and mouseclicks its way. Today, the site launched MySpace Celebrity, a new content channel where MySpace users can keep up on entertainment news, blogs, videos, and events…as well as server as a central point for MySpace users to, like, totally check out the profiles of more than 300 official celebrity profiles.

“MySpace Celebrity is Hollywood’s new home page,” said MySpace President and Co-Founder Tom Anderson, in a statement. “Celebrities have been using MySpace since the site’s launch and it’s a natural extension for us to now offer them an aggregated channel where they can be in control of their own image. We want MySpace users to connect with celebrities in the same way that they do with musicians.”

The channel itself will feature behind-the-scenes video footage with celebrities (launching with video from Elijah Wood and Heloise Williams), exclusive video, Q&A interviews with celebs, and noteworthy celebrity blogs. The channel will also feature a top “Featured Icon” slot focusing on a single celeb: Matthew McConaughy leads the pack, to be followed by 50 Cent, Zach Braff, and Jessica Alba. Celebrity profiles on the site include Balthazar Getty, Ellen Page, Hayden Panettierre, Kimora Lee Simmons, Lauren Conrad, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton, Tom Hanks, Vince Vaughn, and everyone’s favorite imploding pop princess, Britney Spears.

“MySpace is a revolutionary way for people who create things to have a dialogue with an audience who may like (or sometimes dislike) what you’ve created,” said Zach Braff. “It’s kind of like theworld’s largest ongoing conversation.”

Got it: she revolution won’t be televised…but it will have a friends list.
