MySpace Takes Over Web’s Top Spot?

Maybe you've heard of this thing called MySpace? Teens "hang out" there? Well, according to Hitwise, it's now the top-ranked site on the Web, beating out Yahoo and Google.

A year ago, people were shaking their heads when Rupert Murdoch shelled out $580 million dollars for teen-oriented online community site MySpace. Look who’s laughing now: according to Internet tracking firm Hitwise, MySpace has taken over the title as the number one site on the Web, accounting for 4.46 percent of all U.S. Internet visits during the week ending July 8. That puts Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition ahead of Yahoo Mail for the first time, and leaves the home pages for Internet portals like Yahoo, Google, and Hotmail in the dust.

According to Hitwise, MySpace accounted for nearly 80 percent of visits to online social networking sites, which means MySpace is actually gaining share at the expense of other community sites for users into sharing music, photos, video, and other interests.

Hitwise doesn’t break down its figures to calculate the number of unique visitors

  2. Diggbot at 9:43am 13th July 2006 Wow Hitwise really screwed the pooch on this one. Why would they compare MySpace to Yahoo! mail? They are completely unrelated. I am tired of these research firms always providing false information to try and create buzz.

  4. Karl Viklund at 1:51pm 12th July 2006 I think they days are counted for MySpace.
  5. Ian Bell and Dan Gaul at 3:14pm 11th July 2006 I just read in Business 2.0 that MySpace revenue for last year was about $200 million. Looks like Rupert Murdoch was not so dumb in his decision to purchase the company.

With this much traffic and trust by their users, they can essentially do whatever they want to funnel that traffic into other business opportunities.
