New York Times Does Web Site Makeover

Newspaper publisher does a major overhaul of thier high visited Web site, adding new sections and changing the general look and feel.

The New York Times yesterday became the latest newspaper to redesign their Web site as the venerable publication announced what it was calling a “major” overhaul. The overall themes of this redesign were improved navigation, a cleaner look and new personalization options.

The New York Times Web site, which joins the Wall Street Journal who also recently redesigned their site, includes several new sections. These sections are “My Times” (provides readers the ability to create personalized pages via RSS feeds, “Video” (more original Times video reporting and also enable readers to search and view archived video content), “Today’s Paper” (organizes and groups headlines by section of the current day’s newspaper), “Most Popular” (highlights articles most emailed by users and most linked to by bloggers as well as listing more frequently searched keywords) and “Times Topics” (thousands of specific pages which collect recent news, archives and multimedia reference material on people, places, organizations and subjects).

The New York Times also added they’ve redesigned the home page to reportedly provide a cleaner, easier to read look with simplified navigation tools as well as adding a new navigation toolbar located at the top of section fronts and article pages for easier searching.

“The redesign of NYTimes.com significantly advances our place on the Web,” said Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., publisher of The New York Times, in a statement. “We’re taking advantage of new technology to make the site more useful and easier to navigate. Times readers will now have an enhanced site with even greater access to high-quality journalism provided in a way that they can customize to their needs.”
