Spike TV Staking Out Broadband Video

Guy-oriented cable network Spike is launching its own broadband player with original video content and live Webcasts.

Male-oriented action cable television network Spike has announced a new broadband video offering, converting its spiketv.com Web site into a Flash-based, video-centered offering which will showcase live Webcasts and original video content produced exclusively for the online audience.

Oh, and they’ve created a "Babe-a-lizer" for the site. We assume our Gentle Readers can guess what that’s all about.

"We’re creating a cross-platform, cross-browser, consistently rich experience so guys that come to the site can stuff their faces with as much video as they can handle and share it with friends via email or instant messenger," said Steve Farrell, Spike’s vice president of digital media. "We want the site to be not just an extension of what’s on air, but a digital expression of what SPIKE is about—action."

Original programming planned for the Web site includes Rattlesnake Raceway (a show about a group of everyday men who go all out as dirt bike racers not 100 miles from Your Author’s old hometown), Enduro at Erzberg (about a 35 km motocross race in an Austrian copper mine), and Geek-Ray-Vision (a weekly roundup of movies, gadgets, comics and games).

Spike also plans to provide live "cam-in" event coverage from its Scream Awards and the launch of its planned Wild World of Spike user-generated content site.

Just remember: all this goodness is brought to you by the same people who run MTV. And, by extension through parent company Viacom, CBS. Yay.
