This is one of those tech gadgets that we don’t know why no one’s thought of until now. If cellphones can have MP3 ringtones for calls, alarms and text message alerts, couldn’t other items that use sound as an alarm do the same? Meet the Swann MP3 DJ Doorbell. After this little device, long gone may be the days of traditional doorbells’ monotone dings and chimes.
You can customize this wireless doorbell to play any song you want, and you can select the portion of the song you want to hear when guests arrive to your front step. After configuring the songs on your computer via a USB connection, place the receiver part of the doorbell set anywhere in the house. Then, install the buzzer button at your door at no more than 165 feet from the receiver for the devices to sync up. That means the device will still work for approximately up to 15 stories high if you do not live on the ground floor of a home. Both the buzzer and the doorbell speaker require AA battery power, so make sure they are properly juiced up or you may never hear the pizza delivery man arrive to the sound of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Gimme Pizza.
Living on the third floor of a brick home in the ever-noisy New York City, this doorbell is potentially very helpful for metropolitan residents like myself. My current doorbell can barely be heard, and when you do hear it, it sounds like a thirsty, dying dolphin. Sad. This wireless, foolproof setup is both convenient and hassle-free as long as no one tries to steal the buzzer away.
The Swann MP3 DJ Doorbell also has a microSD slot to store up to 32 GB of music, so you can double the doorbell as an MP3 player when you’re not anticipating guests. The memory size can hold up to 10,000 songs, all of which you can cut down to several seconds per ringtone. With those possibilities, let’s hope the person does not ring your doorbell while you’re listening to the same buzzer song on your computer. If you don’t want your favorite tunes as your buzzer, the doorbell also gives you options for traditional chime sounds in a louder, higher quality MP3 format.
You can soon purchase the Swann MP3 DJ Doorbell online at Radioshack, B&H and Amazon for the $50 a piece.
With fun technology like this, we wonder what songs you’d program in the DJ Doorbell for what occasion. We’ve certainly heard people use Darth Vader’s theme song for their ringtones before. At the moment, we can only think of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” (or the Guns N’ Roses version for a more hardcore arrival) or The White Stripes’ “My Doorbell.” Could you name other hilarious tunes that would fit perfectly for a doorbell?
I am not sure that it is a good idea to integrate a door bell with MP3 player. How to distinguish if it is a guest at the door or just my favorite song played? Also a few minutes long song – even the best – seems to be terrible as a door chime. It should be a few seconds long, not minutes! One other weak point is the speaker. It is much too small and its volume is woefully inadequate. So, in my humble opinion it is and totally unnecessary device. By the way, I have nothing against MP3 doorbells. I have one of them in my house, bought from kakadu-usa.com. It is much better and and I can definitely recommend it.
Umm, have you all been sleeping for like the last 10 years? Lame AA battery. The “real” ones replace your chime unit, using AC, and your current button. Looked at getting one of those in my last house, woulda been early 2000′s.
This is really cool. Can’t believe noone has thought of this by now.
